Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve

At the end of the Cape Peninsula is the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve – the 7750 hectors was proclaimed a Reserve in 1939 and has a rugged coastline and  some of the highest cliffs in the world.

It’s almost always windy in the reserve except for a few days a year, so remember to take hat and sunscreen . There’s  a wide variety of rare Fynbos and Protea species that can be seen throughout the Nature Reserve.

I would advise that if you really want to experience the natural beauty of the landscape, hire a car and take a leisurely drive ,you could even  hire a private guide for a day. Tour buses are a waste of time cause they tend to just speed you around and  you’ll miss a lot.

When entering the reserve the landscape looks arid but if you drive slowly and look very carefully you’ll see Bontebok, Ostriches,  Eland, Zebra and a wide variety of Birds.  The Chacma Baboons like all the other animals roam free in the Reserve but if you’re lucky you can see them lazing around on roads outside the reserve, they are wild and dangerous so feeding them is strictly prohibited.

At the informative Visitors Center you’ll find a curio-shop, café and a restaurant  with the most breathtaking views of the False Bay.  A funicular called“Flying Dutchman” goes to the top of Cape Point where you can visit the historical lighthouse.

Another important place in the reserve is the Cape of Good Hope, the most south-westerly (but NOT  the most southerly) tip of Africa. It’s along this coastline where many shipwrecks are found hence the  nickname “Cape of Storms”. There’s also a variety of walks, rides and secluded beaches  to explore and enjoy…
