Over Easy

Someone very wise once told me that old people have radar for quality brunch restaurants – and there were definitely a few pairs of dentures devouring Over Easy’s pancakes and eggs when I was there. The inconspicuously located restaurant is just inside the lobby of the Victoria Hotel on Yonge Street, south of King, with just a small sign announcing it. Inside, the moulding, skylights and laser cut glass roosters make Over Easy look surprisingly upscale. When you order a coffee or tea, you get your own pot – a huge plus for caffeine freaks. The menu is your basic brunch fare, with reasonable prices and a lot of choice. Food comes fast and with a basket of toast to go along with the personal coffee pot. So next time you’re searching for a quick and easy alternative to a greasy spoon, follow the downtown old folks into Over Easy.

Bistro Tournesol

Inconspicuously located on Dupont Street, near Bathurst, Bistro Tournesol is a favourite of Tarragon-Theatre-goers who walk from the restaurant to evening performances. The restaurant has a $27 prix-fixe menu, which includes an appetizer and entrée – and the menu is extensive, with around...

Hole-in-the-wall bars

Sure, getting dressed up and going to a swanky bar can be fun, it can also result in an empty wallet and a cold feeling in your heart. Slick hot spots are the nightlife equivalent of an air kiss: posh and impersonal. Why not celebrate the holiday season in a cozy dive bar? They may not serve themed martinis,...

Snooker is Sexy

Snooker is sexy. Well, playing pool is sexy. Who knows how to play snooker, anyway? But the important thing is that while calling a shot and actually sinking it is hot, the act of leaning over the table to make the shot is pretty provocative as well. Now, don’t start picturing that scene from Alfie,...

A Sushi Standby

The Midtown: Eat, Dance, Drink

There’s no sign outside The Midtown, just a big blue-and-white awning that stands out among the subdued – and flat – exteriors of the neighbouring restaurants and stores. This seems like a fitting representation of a lively restaurant and bar that can’t quite be classified. It’s...

For Tea and Scone Connoisseurs

There’s something about china teacups, tiny pastries and Devon cream that feels luxurious – and it’s not just the price. Having high tea at one of the city’s hotels or tearooms turns a boring afternoon into a special event. Tea service is usually served daily between 2:30 p.m....

Paupers Pub – 539 Bloor Street West (416) 530-1331

The cozy old-fashioned atmosphere and neighbourhood pub attitude at Paupers make you feel instantly at home. The pub, housed in the century-old Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce building, possesses none of the quiet stuffiness of its former incarnation. Visit on a Friday or Saturday night for live music,...
