Located in the heart of Little Italy in Downtown San Diego, remains the home of the popular San Diego Firehouse Museum. It is one of the oldest standing firehouses, and was the original San Diego Fire Station No. 6, but became a speciality museum in 1962.
Once visitors step inside this old firehouse, the clock will turn back in time, as they peruse firefighting memorabilia from 100 years ago. Visitors will have the opportunity to see antique firefighting equipment, such as, fire buckets, gear apparatuses and helmets. And what’s a trip to a firehouse without seeing red, shimmery fire trucks?
An array of fire engines are on exhibit, including “The Lancaster.&lrquo; This 1841, blast from the past engine, was used as a hand-pulled steam engine in the old days. Another great engine on display is the 1903 steam pumper.
Antique alarms, badges and uniforms dated back to the 1880s are also part of the great exhibits to see.
Photographs of heroic fire marshals, chiefs, deputy chiefs, alarm dispatchers and battalions are paid homage at the museum. And speaking of photographs, rare photos also decorate this museum.
While there, don’t forget to take a step inside the small gift shop. There are some nice items in there, including books.
The San Diego Firehouse Museum is definitely worth the trip because it’s so unique. The exhibits are excellent, taking visitors to an era when fighting fires was so very different than it is today.
The Firehouse Museum is open Thursday & Friday from 10am to 2pm and Saturday & Sunday from 10am to 4pm.
