Sometimes there is nothing more pleasurable than surrendering to a good laugh: slouching in a chair, drink in hand, and watching a bold comedian take the stage. Montreal is a comedy hub best known for its annual Just For Laughs festival, where the world’s most talented comedians come together to crack us up. But comedy in Montreal is alive and well all year round, so you don’t have to mark your calendars.
On Bishop St. in downtown Montreal is the cozy comedy venue, Comedyworks. It is an intimate and modest room where about a 100 people are packed in each night to witness local and international talent.
The shows vary depending on the day of the week, so you can go several times for an altogether different experience. Early in the week is open mic night, where seasoned comedians test out their new sets and novice comedians test out their bravery. Mid week you can experience one of Canada’s most popular improv groups, On The Spot. This performance is entirely improvised and relies on the participation of its audience, which makes for a hilarious show, especially when the audience is feeling particularly silly. You can even volunteer to go on stage for certain acts. Finally, at the end of week, there are international headliners with some opening acts to warm up the crowd.
No matter where you stem from, Comedyworks guarantees a good laugh—no chirping crickets will be heard. Beware, however: Montreal is an open minded city, and if you are too serious to even laugh at yourself, well, you may find certain shows improper, to say the least.
