Nu Hotel Entrance
Location
Hailed as Downtown Brooklyn’s first boutique hotel when it opened last year, the brand new NU Hotel at 85 Smith Street at Atlantic Avenue is just a few blocks from the 2, 3, 4, 5, A, B, C, D, F, G, M, N, R and V subway lines wisking you to Manhattan in less than 15 minutes. But if you’re not in such a rush to hit NYC’s flagship isle, Brooklyn will keep you plenty busy. You’ll be staying on Smith Street squarely planted at the intersection of four distinct Brooklyn neighborhoods: Downtown, home to the Brooklyn Academy of Music and office buildings; Boerum Hill, filled with elegant brownstone lined streets; Cobble Hill, a blend of old-world shops, bakeries and community gardens; and Carroll Gardens, an old-fashioned Italian neighborhood with wide streets and antique shops bordering the promenade overlooking the East River. And if you’re not in exploration mode, right outside your door is Atlantic Ave., a thoroughfare of antique shops and specialty eateries along with Smith St. to the south, a seemingly endless strip of interesting shops and restaurants sprinkled with an occasional art gallery or specialty food market.

Inside Room at Nu Hotel
Hotel and Rooms
The Nu Hotel’s 93 loft-inspired rooms are brand spanking new. The property’s exterior is sleek constructed of brick and large plate glass in the lobby letting in plenty of sunlight and sidewalk views. All rooms are outfitted with cork flooring, recycled teak furniture, organic cotton sheets, and biodegradable key cards. Rooms also include 32″ flat-screen televisions with “jack packs” to dock audio, video and computer electronics and complementary wifi access. Bathrooms have stone and glass showers, rain head showers, Aveda bath products and chalkboard walls where you can jot notes for housekeeping or simply unleash your creativity. If street noise bothers you, ask for a room facing away from Atlantic Ave. A free continental breakfast each morning consists of a fruit bowl, coffee, and assorted pastries. The hallways outside the elevators on each floor feature stenciled quotes from famous Brooklynites. Henry Miller’s quote: “One’s destination is never a place, but rather a new way of looking at things.” is emblazoned on the 3rd floor. For those exploring Brooklyn on 2 wheels, look forward to complimentary bike storage.

New York City is known as the nation’s fashion capital….where else could we get away with runways here in the States? Many local bars here in the city are no longer just meet markets or places to get blitzed. For some, the grub is equally if not more compelling than the booze. Gone are the days when hot wings, potato skins, and bowls of peanuts are the main offerings. I recommend starting at The Spotted Pig which...
