Brasserie JO is located in the Colonnade Hotel, but is most definitely not your typical hotel restaurant- the food is just too good. The large dining room fronts busy Huntington Avenue in the Back Bay. The crowd is chic, yet casual. There is always a buzz here; especially on Boston Symphony or Boston Pops nights- Symphony Hall is located just a couple of blocks away and many diners are here pre-performance.
At the bar, the nibbles are better than average. The tarte flambé; a bacon and onion flat bread is complimentary when you buy a drink.
A warm baguette and butter are a sure sign of a good French restaurant. A small palate teaser arrives too- mustard marinated cold carrots. There’s a regional Alsace flare to a lot of the dishes. The chef’s appetizer of a wild mushroom tart alongside a ramekin of veal ragout is perfectly complemented by the restaurant’s specially made draft house beer, "Hopla"
The steak pommes frites is a specialty – and not for the timid. The steak nearly falls off the plate; and the accompanying pile of French fries is among the best in the city. The roasted sea bass on a bed of white beans is a great pairing.
For dessert everyone (rightly) raves about the profiteroles with chocolate sauce. Not an ice cream fan? You can’t go wrong with Brassiere JO’s crème brulée or chocolate mousse.
