Summer is Family Bonding Time

When I was a child, summer meant bonding time with grandparents, cousins, and other relatives we didn’t often see. Most years, my siblings and I would stay for a month at my maternal grandparents’ home in Bataan. A couple of times, we saw our paternal grandparents, who came to visit us when we couldn’t go to Negros to see them.
Those summer weeks were the times when we forged friendships with our cousins, relationships which thrive until now. Relationships which I hope my kids will have when...

Musings: Summer Escapes

To me, the Fourth of July is the real beginning of summer, and despite the festivities that sprout up throughout the valley, it is also a time to get away from the intense summer heat. We just bopped up to the mountains, to Lake Arrowhead in the San Bernadino Mountains of California, where temperatures were 20 degrees cooler and the water clear blue.
One doesn’t have to drive three hours, however, to escape the summer heat. Lake Mead National Recreation Area is 35 minutes from the Strip. ...

This Thursday marks the begining of the Tollwood summer Festival. Since 1988, Munich summers have been graced by the warm weathered counter part of the Tollwood festivals. From June 18th to July 12th, the Olympia Park will play host to hundreds of musicians, artists, performers and kiosks selling everything from organic hemp shirts to schnitzel. You can enjoy the festival for free! Or, if you would like to see any of the many fantastic entertainers, check out the Music-Arena List for more information....

West Hollywood’s Views from the Pool Deck

It’s summer (despite the May gray and possible June gloom), and what better place to laze away the days or ogle the nighttime skies than from a pool deck in the heart of happening West Hollywood? Even if it’s too overcast to check out the Hollywood Hills and city views, it’s never too hazy in this city to see and be seen on a roof in the sexiest ‘hood in Tinseltown. Cabanas, movie stars in their bathers, the good life…

While Memorial Day may mean the start of summer for many, it’s evolution and celebration is deeply rooted in our history and the fabric of our country. After the end of the Civil War, the tradition began of honoring soldier who had been killed in battle, and a special day was set aside for remembrance. It was originally called Decoration Day.
Since then, it has evolved into a Federal Holiday, observed the last Monday in May, and honors those who died while in service to their country.

A Guide to Enjoying Sydney’s Beaches

With the mercury rising, the beach is the best place to be in Sydney over summer. A day out enjoying the sun, surf, and sand is great fun, but there are also a few things tourists should be aware of. Here are my top tips to enjoying the local beaches.
Always swim at a patrolled beach. If you run into any trouble in the water, you’ll want lifeguards close by.
All patrolled beaches have a designated swimming area marked with red and yellow flags. Always swim between these flags to stay safe and...

It’s absolutely, drop-dead gorgeous outside. So, let’s say that you’re done with the museums, and the city tours, and the palaces, and the Bavarian restaurants and the blah blah blah. You just want to sit down, relax and enjoy the sun. Well, where do Müncheners go when they feel the exact same way? They pack a picnic and head over to the Englischer Garten. Founded in 1789 by the Count of Rumford, the Englischer Garten is bigger than Central Park in New York City, but smaller than...
