Like any good London neighborhood, South Kensington has some great shops – and not those boring high street brands. Sloane Avenue and Fulham Road are where most shops are. A few local secrets:
Demarquette (map): Hand-made, chemical-free, additive-free chocolate. Any questions?

In seventeenth century Amsterdam, house fronts and gables were status symbols. As the city levied tax according to the width of houses, home owners added a few metres to the top of their houses to show wealth. Have a close look and see the sturdy rods that support these false gables.
The best place to see the rods is on the fifth floor of Metz Department Store. The large windows of The Metz Café look out over Amsterdam centre. Sit at one of the window tables in Metz Café. Down below stretch spiderweb...

Capital Culture in Canada

So, let’s just clarify – yes, Canada does have a capital. Do you know where? It’s Ottawa, located in the northeast of Ontario, one of the country’s most populous provinces, and just across the river from the French-speaking Quebec province; this part of town is called Gatineau. These two provinces were considered the most important at the time, so what better place to choose than Ottawa. Or so it seemed – there was a bit of subterfuge involved, probably choosing...

I’ve often visited Portobello Road (map) to look for antiques, but I’d never bothered with the vintage clothes market up the north end of the road. Now I know better! It’s a fantastic place, really good fun to lurk around, full of colour and also – as I found when I got chatting to a couple of the stallholders – full of colourful personalities.
A marvellous stall run by a fantastic lady with great taste in hats
Particularly interesting for me was the jewellery market,...

The Best of Buffalo: Elmwood Village

I was pleasantly surprised during my recent travel to Buffalo, New York. My visions of snowdrifts and snowplows did not come to fruition, though I was smart and visited during the height of summer. However, I was blown away but the charming communities and superb architecture all over the city. One area, though, really stood out to me as a special place, one worth making the trip to Buffalo only to see. That’s Elmwood Village, just north of the city’s downtown quarter.
