Happy Hour at Trader Vic’s in Old Town Scottsdale

The Trader Vic’s in the swanky Hotel Valley Ho hotel in Old Town Scottsdale is not your grandmother’s Trader Vics.
Some might remember fondly the dark, cavernous restaurant chain featured in many locales around the country, but for me the rattan covered walls, lava rocks and over-the-top tiki lamps over time became dated.
This Trader Vic’s puts a more modern spin on the traditional Polynesian motif, with sleek rattan chairs, and colorful couches and ottomans that you don’t have to wonder...

A Little History
Cuba is the birthplace of the mojito, a summery drink traditionally made of five ingredients: white rum or vodka, sugar, lime, sparkling water and mint.Although the exact origin of this classic cocktail is the subject of debate, one story traces the mojito to a similar 16th century drink, the “El Draque,”...

Living in the Desert the Wright Way
... welcomed friends from Southern California and they suggested that we visit Taliesin West, Frank Lloyd Wright’s desert residence and workshop in Scottsdale. I’ve been interested in taking one of their many tours for awhile, but just haven’t made the effort. I’m so thrilled that I finally did and my husband, a closet architect, was equally as excited and impressed with this historic landmark.

Nothing Bundt Cakes
When I was a kid, my friend lived next door to the Maurice Lenell cookie factory. The counter lady would give us free cookies and we would run home change our clothes pretending to be someone else and go back for more. I realized early on that I would do anything for sweets and bakeries were my refuge. I haven’t found in Phoenix the German, Polish, Italian and French bakeries that I grew up with and I’m sure my waistline is grateful, but I’m not.
It took some...

As a somewhat new resident to The Valley of the Sun (7 years and counting), I’ve grown to love my adopted home and enjoy trying new restaurants, hiking with my dog, watching the amazing Arizona sunsets, relaxing at spas and venturing out to museums, live music events and theatre. There are so many amazing things to see and do around that I’ve had a difficult time knowing where to start.
I guess if I were asked how I would spend “my perfect day” the following places would make my list:
