Edinburgh Festival Review – 4 Poofs and a Piano

Jonathan Ross’s TV sidekicks come to show off the best of their camp to Edinburgh.
David, Ian, David, and Stephen are Edinburgh Fringe regulars, and it was a good laugh to finally see what all the fuss was about. Normally you’ll find then relaxing around the piano on the television with the occasional flourish of dance, but when they take the stage they REALLY take the stage. Through several colourful sets, these guys show off their vocal skillls – they can sing 80s dance,...

Edinburgh Festival Review – A ClockWork Orange
Warning: strpos() [function.strpos]: Offset not contained in string. in /var/www/blog/wp-content/themes/ISOMagazine/functions.php on line 317
Stanley Kubrick’s epic novel comes to the Fringe stage.
Clockwork Orange was a vivid film, blindsiding you with its strange language, its curious conventions, and its harsh violent reality. Bringing this to the theatre would be no easy feat, and I think this Fringe production of the film was a bit overambitious with their efforts to do so. There wouldn’t be enough time to fit the movie into just over an hour production, but the script actually uses the book ending instead of the...

Edinburgh Festival Review – Destroy Powerpoint
Warning: strpos() [function.strpos]: Offset not contained in string. in /var/www/blog/wp-content/themes/ISOMagazine/functions.php on line 317
Powerpoint becomes a new medium for Edinburgh Fringe delivery…
David Gaffney’s Destroy Powerpoint preys on an easy target: Powerpoint, a tool which intended to improve communications but many say have ruined it. And Wow, Gaffney has the graphical talents to prepare some pretty amazing slide packs as demonstrated in his show – combined with his way with words as a writer, the slide packs themselves are nothing short of fantastic. Unfortunately, a poor setup of lighting meant...

Edinburgh Festival Review – Cabaret Whore
Warning: strpos() [function.strpos]: Offset not contained in string. in /var/www/blog/wp-content/themes/ISOMagazine/functions.php on line 317
Some of Edinburgh’s best cabaret in a Fringe-tastic setting…
Sarah-Louise Young takes us thorugh a wonderful array of three not-so-classic cabaret characters: acountry and western porn star, a forgotten French diva and a librarian cum talent show reject. Each set demonstrates Young’s beyond-belief vocal skills, and the songs are not only well written but couldn’t be more perfect for the setting. She has the audience in sitches every minute of the performance, and you’ll...

Edinburgh Festival Review – Killing Me Softly
Warning: strpos() [function.strpos]: Offset not contained in string. in /var/www/blog/wp-content/themes/ISOMagazine/functions.php on line 317
Possibly the most distrubed man in the Edinburgh Fringe….
As many of you know, Richard Fry’s Bully was one of my favourite shows in the 2008 Edinburgh Fringe. Richard is back this year with another hard-hitting monologue delivery, Killing Me Softly. (Bully is also running, in case you missed it). The story starts out innocently enough, a gathering for a ‘welcome home’ party. But after a few beers and karoke songs, we quickly learn that something very very wrong is lurking...

Edinburgh Festival Review – Dixie’s Tupperware Party
Warning: strpos() [function.strpos]: Offset not contained in string. in /var/www/blog/wp-content/themes/ISOMagazine/functions.php on line 317
Have you ever been to a Tupperware Party?
Edinburgh Fringe gets a taste of classic American culture with the appearance of Dixie, alter ego of Erik Andersson. She’s the number one selling Tupperware lady in the US (yes, really – it is a Tupperware party – I didn’t realise at the time of booking) and she helpfully walks you through the uses and functional aspects of a number of tupperware products. But this isn’t your typical Tupperware party – one might expect...

Edinburgh Festival Review – Burn
Warning: strpos() [function.strpos]: Offset not contained in string. in /var/www/blog/wp-content/themes/ISOMagazine/functions.php on line 317
Three people, stranded on an island…
Burn followers the trials and tribulations of three people stranded on a desert island, each unaware of how they arrived or why. A ex-financier, a lesbian author, and a Russian whore who all have something in common – will they figure it out? With a simple stage set and no props and only the occasional sound interlude, this play rests solely on the acting ability the three characters, and indeed they do a supreme job. Special kudos goes out to Iaione...

Edinburgh Festival Review – Midsummer
Warning: strpos() [function.strpos]: Offset not contained in string. in /var/www/blog/wp-content/themes/ISOMagazine/functions.php on line 317
As many of you reading this may know, any evening in Edinburgh can result in the unexpected…
5 star entertainment
Midsummer starts out with an innocent enough beginning: two lost souls in a bar on a rainy night in Edinburgh. He’s a failing car salesman on the fringes of the city’s underworld and she’s a high powered divorce lawyer with a taste for other people’s husbands. She’s out of his league and he’s not her type at all. But the tale that is weaved...

Does one of Britain’s most revered authors need more spice in her literature?
Australian-flavoured prodution company Out Cast Theatre returns to the Edinburgh Fringe this year with another saucy number. The plot: a modern day writer faces writers block in attempting to write stories with less smut and more romance. His muse? Jane Austen, who he hopes to inject with some sexually passionate writing while getting her help for some of his on romantic writing. The two writer’s stories...

Edinburgh Festival Review – Soft Murders
Warning: strpos() [function.strpos]: Offset not contained in string. in /var/www/blog/wp-content/themes/ISOMagazine/functions.php on line 317
Ever wonder what you get when you cross modern art and physical dance theatre?
Soft Murders is a an attempt at exploring the works of three modern artists on the stage: Gilbert and George, Andy Warhol, and Francis Bacon. The first scene, Gilbert & George, opens with extremely sexual overtones, putting you squarely in your uncomfort zone and keeping you there the rest of the hour. My favourite is the second scene, Andy Warhol, which is as playful and colourful (and garish!) as the mystery...

Are men and women really from different planets?
I’m not sure which was funnier at Julia Bolden’s Venus and Mars and Other Myths of Mr and Ms, the dry humour sprinkled heavily thoughout or the ridiculous and fantastic costume choice…wait for it – aprons! From Adam and Eve, to Napoleon and Josephine, to Cleopatra and Ptolemy, and even Romeo and Juliet, we learn the facts (?) about the history of man and woman. With fantastic delivery by the two actors, all is revealed...

Edinburgh Festival Review – Up

Up into the dark mind of a confused soul…
James Ley’s Up takes into the twisting, turning world inside the mind of the play’s only character. Waxing from extreme calm to extreme chaos, I found hearing the mixed up thoughts and ideas of an obviously distressed man intriguing and often hilarious. The play leaves a few too many pieces of the plot a bit vauge, but you won’t have any questions about what happens in the end. The actor’s ability to deliver on so many...

What do you get when you put a Ginge*, a Geordie, and a Geek up on one stage?
5 star world class sketch comedy!
(* For the non-UK folks: a Ginge is someone with ginger hair)
Paul Charlton (who wroute Crush, another Edinburgh Guide 2009 favourite) is the Geordie in the hilarious trio called the G3. Bestowed with comedy superpowers by a nameless man, the three transform an underground Edinburgh vault into a room full of endless laughs and hilarity. With a series of various sketches, they examine...

Completely over-the-top and inappropriate comedy that just can’t be beat….
5 star hilarity
This crazy duo aims, in less than an hour, to discuss the various socially inappropriate situtations in which you might find yourself. Topics covered include “that guy” sitting next to you on the bus, your average (?) neighbourhood reading group, guy’s toilet chat, death, introducing yourself, and other miscellany of uncomfortable situtations.
I’m not sure I’ve ever...

Edinburgh Festival Review – Zeitgeist

One of those Fringe plays which is nearly unable to be described…
5 stars without a doubt!
I knew I was in for something pretty spectacular when the flyer warns: Butoh, Burlesque, Loud Music, Partial Nudity, and Flying Food. If you didn’t know any better, you’d though you had went to a rave. In fact, I kept trying to compare Zeitgeist to other things I knew. Maybe it was like that party scene at Zion in the Matrix movie. Maybe it was a zombie scene from 28 Days Later. Definitely...

Worth seeing for beliving that one man can do all that…
5 stars!
Charles Ross’s One Man Lord of the Rings is a mezmerising feat of brute strength – his voice! In the course of an hour, he uses voice tricks and a mastery of voice impressions to take you through all three episodes in the Lord of the Rings series. (Yes, I said all three.)
He doesn’t have any props, external sound affects, or costumes. It’s just him and the odd lighting change.
Sure – he’s...

Review: Fresh, Fashionable Food at Zanzero in Edinburgh
Warning: strpos() [function.strpos]: Offset not contained in string. in /var/www/blog/wp-content/themes/ISOMagazine/functions.php on line 317
I had the most brilliant lunch last week at Zanzero, a bright and cheery cafe/restaurant just on the edge of trendy Stockbridge. It’s a great little hideaway from the hustle and bustle of George Street and Princes Street – a perfect getaway from the festival madness methinks.
Zanzero is a sister to Centotre, another one of Edinburgh’s best restaurants. While there are a few similarities – great food being one of them – the Zanzero experience has its own personality.
Ambience
Petite...

Great Italian in Edinburgh’s West End
Warning: strpos() [function.strpos]: Offset not contained in string. in /var/www/blog/wp-content/themes/ISOMagazine/functions.php on line 317
I had a chance last week to pop into La Piazza, an easily missed Italian restaurant in Edinburgh’s West End.
sunset on Shandwick Place
The Venue
I kind of feel like La Piazza is backwards. The entrance on Shandwick Place itself is totally missable, with no patrons being seated in the window tables and a huge flatscreen television distracting the eye. Inside it is a narrow portion of the restaurant before opening up into the larger dining area in the back. Beyond the dining area is a...

Restaurant Kuchen Kaiser

These days the “Cake King” of Kreuzberg (map) is more Bar than Bakery, but a decent place for kicking back in the summer weather, grabbing a bite to eat or a drop to drink.
The Restaurant Kuchen Kaiser has an impressive history – although it’s not really it’s own. Founded in 1866 at the site it is now, Kuchen Kaiser was a large bakery/cafe which had Berlin’s first ammonia refrigerator and it’s first revolving door – out of which many customers and staff...

C&O Trattoria Ristorante Italiano is one of those locals’ favorites that busy visitors often miss. A block from the famous boardwalk in Venice, California, it is tucked away in a hidden courtyard without an ocean view. The romantic outdoor courtyard, however, offers old fashioned open air dining near a fountain filled with koi. The restaurant, serving Northern Italian cuisine is noted for its tasty gargantuan portions, suitable for sharing.
We stopped by on the way to LAX, about 10...
