Tales from the Road: Eat Where the Locals Eat

While recently on the road, I realized the problem with a four-day trip – there isn’t enough time to eat everywhere that you want to. You know what I’m talking about, those little places that look so interesting while you’re passing through town.
So, it’s importantly that you choose wisely, especially if you know that you might not be back in the area for a while.
One place that intrigued me on my road-trip adventure was Clawdaddy’s in Crystal River, Fla. I had...

Coffee Shop Rules

Don’t leave Amsterdam without visiting a coffee shop aka hash bar. But before you go. Did you know that it is a misconception to think that possession of soft drugs is legal in the Netherlands. They are decriminalised, and that’s all.
coffeeshop, bulldog
Every person over eighteen is allowed (tolerated to be more precise) to possess thirty grams of soft drugs. A coffeeshop can stock five hundred grams of weed and can sell five grams to one person per day. One hundred customers and...

Live Music Every Friday at Rock Bottom Brewery in Downtown Denver

I’ve been spending quite a bit of time in downtown Denver this summer and I love it. I told you about the new bar, the Oak Tavern, that my husband and I went to and this past weekend, I went to Rialto Cafe’s Summer Wine Dinner. I can’t wait to tell you about that!
The Friday night that we went to the new bar, we decided to walk around 16th street for a little while. Little did I know that Rock Bottom Brewery [map] has what they call “Music at the Bottom” every Friday...

Restaurant Review: Fine Dining at Wedgwood Cafe, Edinburgh
Warning: strpos() [function.strpos]: Offset not contained in string. in /var/www/blog/wp-content/themes/ISOMagazine/functions.php on line 317
The Royal Mile is one of those world-famous streets that has a diverse range of food, from cheap chip shops to more expensive (but worth it) venues. Wedgwood Cafe is mid-way down the Royal Mile, thankfully in a spot out of reach of the blare of tartan shops with their obvioxous bagpipes and garish storefronts. In contrast, Wedgwood is all things they aren’t: subdued, relaxed, refined.
The Venue
Swish and modern, the Wedgwood is very tastefully and carefully decorated. Being not a huge...

As I have mentioned previously, I really can’t imagine paying full price again for a meal or a drink with all the special deals going on. The restaurant would have to really be something extraordinary. But in the world of great deals, there are some that really stand out from the rest and here’s a promotion that I absolutely love. You will have to go down to South Beach though.

Don Chile Returns with Mexican Flair in the Gables

It might seem easy to pull off, but fine Mexican fare takes talent, time and practice. Luckily, as far southeast as the Miami area there are dining spots that have all the talent and ingredients. One that has made a comeback worth checking out is Don Chile’s, in the downtown area of Coral Gables.
The menu and its execution here are now overseen by by Chef Erubiel Gutierrez, from Campeche. The selection features such well-known favorites as fajitas, flautas, and carne asada — but also...

Spicy Dinner at Thai Pepper Restaurant in Taikoo
Warning: strpos() [function.strpos]: Offset not contained in string. in /var/www/blog/wp-content/themes/ISOMagazine/functions.php on line 317
I’ve lived in the Taikoo Shing/Quarry Bay area on Hong Kong Island my whole life and one of my favourite things about it is the different places I can eat in! Though restaurants and cafes popping up here and there probably means it won’t be long before Taikoo Shing becomes like all the other overcrowded and congested areas around Hong Kong, there are some great places that I do love to dine in.
Last week I had a quick dinner at Thai Pepper and I have to say, the food is scrumptious. I’ve...

Amsterdam Tasting bars

Proeflokaal translates as tasting bar. They specialise in wine, liqueur or beer and date back to the 17th century. This was a time of great wealth. Amsterdam merchants traded with the east and money jingled in their pockets. In order to increase their sales importers and distillers of wines and spirits invited merchants to taste the product. This was done in a proeflokaal. Amsterdam still has several of these tasting bars.

While everyone knows what to expect to expect from the global chains that dispense fast foods with their own take on the hamburger or hotdog, what you encounter at a local chain of fast food classics can still prove to be something more unique. In the case of Dogma Grill, a small-ish and locally operated retro-styled roadside stand along Biscayne in Miami and Federal Highway in Fort Lauderdale, dispensing hot dogs in a wide variety of alternatives, there is a definite attempt to put a style along...

Meat lovers – prepare to meet your match. Rio de Janeiro is famous for its churrascarias (restaurants serving barbequed/grilled meats); and even more famous for those that serve the meat rodizio style.
Rodizio churrascarias see waiters bring cut after cut of sizzling meat to your table until your stomach can take no more, all for a set price that can range from as little as R$15 to as much as R$160. Forget any notions of ‘all you can eat’ joints as low class establishments, Rio’s...

Ice cream in the past five years has gone through major upgrades. Its derivatives and taste-a-likes have been grabbing a lot of attention. People are no longer excited with anything that comes in a tub. For it to be appealing, it needs to be homemade or it needs to be mixed in front of you on a cold slab of rock. There are also those ice creams that claim to be different like Italian gelato and lately, frozen yogurt!
So much emphasis has gone into making ice cream...

Refurbished Cool Drink Kiosks Serving Traditional Snacks

Back in my grand father’s years, people used to refresh from the heat in some nice kiosks at the park serving cold lemonade and other simple drinks. Those days where gone as those cute kiosks evolved into dark, rusty and dirty stalls serving beer and oily snacks or selling newspapers.
Three of them have finally been restored by the owners and managers of Vida Portuguesa Store (read my review) and Deli Delux Store (read my review) to recover the old felling. At Principe Real (map), Praça das Flores...

I was born and raised a city girl, but I can’t deny that I love the beach. In Hong Kong, Shek O is probably my go-to beach in those times when I desperately need to take a break. Reason being that it’s easy to get to, but mostly because my favourite restaurant is located there.
‘Shek O’ literally translates to “rocky bay” and is actually a beachside village in the Southern District of Hong Kong famous for its scenery. Since I live in Taikoo Shing...

I often walk down Leidsestraat on my way to work, but never have time to shop or look at architectural details. But yesterday I took my time. As always the street buzzes with activity. Fashion boutiques, designers shoes, perfum and cosmetics souvenir shops and fastfood outlets brim with customers.
