We’ve got several months until Christmas, but just seeing this photo reminds me why Edinburgh is an it destination for Christmas.
The wheel is in Princes Street Gardens and is the centrepiece of Edinburgh’s Christmas market. The wheel gets some good competition though between Christmas and Hogmanay, when more amusement rides come to entertain all of the visitors.
Christmas, believe it or not, is a very busy tourism period so if you want to come, now’s the time to book your...

Photo Friday: Halifax Bank of Scotland Headquarters

One of the key features of Edinburgh’s “skyline”, if we were to call it that, is the gorgeous architecture of the (former) HBOS Headquarters.
The building is no longer the Halifax Bank of Scotland (HBOS) Headquarters since the company was bought by Lloyds Banking Group last year, but the building here on the Mound still houses the “Museum on the Mound,” which explores the history of notes and coins in Scotland. You even get to see how ‘big’ a million pounds...

... you want to stop for tea and rest your heels. Be sure to hang out long enough to watch the wheel make a rotation – it is stupendous.
Happy photo friday!

Photo Friday: Bridge on the Water of Leith

Nothing says TGIF like this fantastic photo of a bridge near the Gallery of Modern Art on the Water of Leith.
This is a perfect place to have a romantic moment with a special someone. The bridge here is just between Stockbridge and Roseburn Terrace, far down the hill from Haymarket station. The bridge, as the sign implies, leads to a trail that takes you to the Gallery of Modern Art.
This is a great section of the walking path, with benches and a large wier (waterfall). It’s scenic and...

TGIF: It’s that time again, time for photo friday. Today we have a spooky night shot of George Heriot’s School.
It’s such a gorgeous building, opened in the 1600s as George Heriot’s hospital. George Heriot was a wealthy philanthropist and goldsmith who at the time donated for several buildings and structures in Edinburgh. He had no children, which may be why he gave so much for schools and universities.
The building’s architect was no other than famed Scottish...

It’s photo friday again, and today’s shot is a new angle on a familiar site: the Scottish Parliament.
This photo is of the Canongate Wall, which is one of the many pieces of outdoor public art featured around the Parliament. The wall is made up of several types of stones from Scotland, and features 26 quotations from noteworthy Scottish figures. It’s a tourist favourite, and here are a few of the sayings you can enjoy:

Photo Friday: Bass Rock, North Berwick

The fun folks at Delicious Baby have a great ritual of featuring a photo every Friday so we thought we’d join in. Today is Bass Rock in North Berwick.
Bass Rock is actually and island, made up of volcanic rock. Usually called the “Bass, ” it’s actually privately owned by a family, and while not inhabited at the moment (apart from a flock of gannets), there’s the remains of a castle, chapel, and even a lighthouse that was built in 1902.
Don’t confuse this with...
