Review of Hillend Ski Slope

As we’ve had several dustings of snow lately here in Edinburgh, I thought I’d mention the dry ski slope that is available year-round just south of Edinburgh, in Hillend.
The Midlothian Snowsports Centre, as it is officially known, has one of the longest “dry” or artificial ski slopes in all of Europe. The slope looks somewhat like a picket fence but lying down on the ground. It’s good food and offers great views of Edinburgh and the Lothian hills surrounding.
For those not up for skiing,...

KITSILANO: THE PARKS and BEACHES

What makes Kitsilano one of the most popular districts of Vancouver is its accessibility to the beaches. Kits is bordered on the north by two beaches, Kitsilano Beach, located at Yew and Cornwall Ave. and Jericho Beach, farther west at Discovery and Wallace Sts, on the shores of English Bay. Kitsilano Beach also has a swimming pool and is the site of the famous Kitsilano Showboat which has been providing outdoor entertainment for the area since 1935.
The Showboat is an amphitheatre with...

If you’ve read some of my earlier posts about Museums, you may have thought, ”Eh, 9€ is a bit more than I’d like to spend on admission to see a bunch of old stuff.” Well! What if I told you that 1€ could open the doors to all of the State-run museums such as the Alte Pinakothek where you can explore a fabulous collection of European art, or enjoy some Greek and Roman architecture at the Glyptothek. Both of these museums are in great areas and are within walking distance...

If you’re looking for something a little more organized than just hopping on a bike and exploring the city on your own, check out Mike’s Bike Tours which is famous in Munich as a fun and affordable tourist activity. Pratically a Munich instituion, Mike is an American guy who came over from the States about 10 years ago and began to give tours of Munich on a bike. What a Beautiful Day for a Bike Ride!
Warning: strpos() [function.strpos]: Offset not contained in string. in /var/www/blog/wp-content/themes/ISOMagazine/functions.php on line 317
What better way to experience the beauty of Munich than a lovely bike ride. The weather is fantastic, the air is crisp and Munich is a city that has gone out of its way to be bike-rider friendly. Get yourself over the the Hauptbahnhof and ask where the bike rental center is. You have to register with the Deutsche Bahn with a viable credit card and they’ll give you instructions as to how to unlock your bike of choice. You can take these bikes all over the city, and as long as you lock them,...

I received a forwarded email from my boss at Planeteye (hey Mark!) from someone who recently moved to Munich and had some questions. So I thought, “Maybe there are more people out there who have questions about Munich that I haven’t covered in my posts and they’re just dying out there without me to help them”.
Well, I’m giving you a voice!
I opened an email account just for you lovely readers out there to ask questions, suggest topics, or give feedback! After reviewing...

Let’s Go to the Beach…well, sort of!
Warning: strpos() [function.strpos]: Offset not contained in string. in /var/www/blog/wp-content/themes/ISOMagazine/functions.php on line 317
With this gorgeous weather that we’ve been having, I’m sure that a quick dip into something cool would be just about one of the best things you could think of doing. As we’re in Bavaria, I can’t say that there is a “beach” anywhere close by, but that doesn’t mean we’re facing a lost cause! Munich is filled with fantastic public swimming pools all around the city, just look one up on the internet and you’ll be on your way to some poolside lounging...

Open Tuinen dagen / Open Garden Days
Warning: strpos() [function.strpos]: Offset not contained in string. in /var/www/blog/wp-content/themes/ISOMagazine/functions.php on line 317
The large back gardens of canal houses are well-kept secrets. Once a year these secrets are revealed when many gardens are open to the public.
In the 17th and 18th centuries these gardens were mainly decorative. They were meant to be looked at not to sit in or to work in. Gardeners kept them in shape. The flowers, plants and trees had to look their best in the winter months because this was the time of year that the owners lived in their town houses. The rest of the year they enjoyed life in their...

Poetry in the Park
Warning: strpos() [function.strpos]: Offset not contained in string. in /var/www/blog/wp-content/themes/ISOMagazine/functions.php on line 317
Bright red poles sprung up overnight in Vondelpark, or so it seemed. Last time I strolled through the park they weren’t there. This needed closer inspection.
All in all there are seven of these poles in different location. They were placed here on 1st June to celebrate Poetry in the Park and will remain until 24th August. Each pole bears the name of a Dutch poet, a telephone number and a poet number. Ring the phone number, tap in the poem number and you will hear the poem recited by the poet...

Vlaggetjesdag: the First Herring of the Season
Warning: strpos() [function.strpos]: Offset not contained in string. in /var/www/blog/wp-content/themes/ISOMagazine/functions.php on line 317
Yesterday the first barrel of nieuwe haring was auctioned at €55.000. This year the proceeds will go to psychological healthcare. Every year another charity benefits.
The first herring of the season is known as Hollandse nieuwe, groene haring or maatjesharing. From today, fishmongers are allowed to advertise this fish using one of these three names which indicates that the herring is still young. This salty delicacy can be savoured at any herring cart. Fork out €1.80, coat the herring with chopped...

It’s absolutely, drop-dead gorgeous outside. So, let’s say that you’re done with the museums, and the city tours, and the palaces, and the Bavarian restaurants and the blah blah blah. You just want to sit down, relax and enjoy the sun. Well, where do Müncheners go when they feel the exact same way? They pack a picnic and head over to the Englischer Garten. Founded in 1789 by the Count of Rumford, the Englischer Garten is bigger than Central Park in New York City, but smaller than...

Kicking it back with the Locals: Chinesische Turm

Although April weather may be rather unpredictable, for example in the past 3 days we’ve had gorgeous and warm sunny weather, rain and snow, it is the time when Munich’s infamous beer gardens are shaking off those winter blues and opening their doors, as well as beer taps, to the public. If you find yourself in Munich on a sunny day, whether spring or summer, head on over to one of the more famous beer gardens: Die Chinesische Turm or in English, The Chinese Tower. With the English...
