A couple of weeks ago thousands of marijuana enthusiasts gathered on the steps of the Vancouver Art Gallery for the annual 420 stoner celebration. The 420 celebration originated in 1970 in San Rafael, California when a group of high school students gathered at 4.20 pm every day to smoke marijuana. April 20 has now become a social, political and cultural event.
This weekend there was another rally at the VAG, part of a cross-country and world demonstration to legalize marijuana. As the pungent...

If you’ve been to Edinburgh’s St Andrews Square recently, you might be surprised to see it’s a busy place – in fact, it’s looking like the animals from Edinburgh Zoo have escaped and have setup camp!
Welcome, The Lion of Scotland
Chilling out just north of the statue in the middle of the square is a large granite lion. Visitors might assume this is a new Edinburgh attraction, but this is actually one of the lions from Holyrood Park that’s been moved (original...

Edinburgh Airport Springs into Summer
... But that could all change between the time this was written and when you’re reading it!
Regardless, I though I’d share some great News about new Edinburgh airport routes being serviced by several carriers. This means that there are now more easy ways to get into Edinburgh – and of course, more direct places for locals to stretch their legs. The airport is also in full swing on terminal improvements, and from what I’ve seen so far it’s shaping up very nicely. Lots...

Downtown Rio de Janeiro has been brought to a virtual standstill as the heaviest rains in 30 years have brought death and destruction on a horrific scale.
Some 80-plus people are thought to have died as a result of the torrential downpours, which began during Tuesday afternoon´s rush hour and did not let up until Wednesday afternoon.
I was in downtown Rio when the heavens opened, and within an hour the city center streets were ankle deep in filthy water. A lack of efficient drainage meant that the...

New Hands-Free Law for Washington State

The State of Washington has had hands-free cell phone laws in place for awhile now, but recently enacted legislation will make enforcement of those regulations a little easier.
Senate Bill 6345, which goes into law on June 11th, 2010, will boost the use of a hand-held cell phone while driving from a secondary offense (requiring another traffic violation to be cited) to a primary offense. This means that the police can pull you over if they see you using a hand-held device – and for no other...

This is the second year that Lisbon takes part on this action that sends a clear message of the urge to change our ways of thinking and doing. Grosvenor Square has been the home of the US Embassy to the UK for 50 years. But now, the embassy is moving from the West End to Battersea.
The current American embassy: very modernist, not very modern
The new embassy looks quite startlingly modern; it’s a glass cube, set among landscaped gardens, which both provide a beautiful environment, and enhance security (earthen banks are designed to withstand explosive blasts of some force). It’s also a carbon neutral building, using modern...

Difficult to believe, but the London Eye [map] has just had its tenth birthday. The largest ferris wheel in Europe, it’s already had more than 30 million visitors.
I always think the Eye is one of those tourist attractions you get the most out of if you already know London well – you can recognise the landmarks spread out below, and you can even follow the railways and roads out of the centre and see where they go. On a good day, I’m told, you can see Windsor Castle.
The Eye isn’t...
