A big thank you to Blue Ridge Country magazine for directing my attention to the Southern Environmental Law Center’s project Why You Care. The organization is in search of stories from you about your favorite place in the south to visit. Whether you visit there frequently, grew up there or visited one time and it made an impression on you, they want to hear about it. So, if you have a favorite place in Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee or Virginia (or all of the...

Volcano skiing anyone?

Warning: strpos() [function.strpos]: Offset not contained in string. in /var/www/blog/wp-content/themes/ISOMagazine/functions.php on line 317
These pics are of, and from, Osorno Volcano, just outside of Puerto Varas, not far from Chile’s Pacific coast. A pretty little town of German-influenced houses and traditions, Puerto Varas sits on the eastern shore of massive Lake Llanquihue, with a perfect view of Osorno on the opposite side. The top is glacial, and there is actually a ski lift and small ski resort near the top! Thought it might ruin the impact of the photos if I posted those ones…. ...

Bariloche Active – Lake Nahuel Huapi

Surrounded by mountains, lakes and forests (and sitting within a national park), Bariloche is a veritable natural playground (and a familiar-feeling place for a homesick Canadian in Latin America!) If you want to work up a sweat or just get out into the famously clean clear air of the Argentinean lake district, there’s no end of options. The natural first option is skiing—the whole place seems geared for skiers, and Cerro Catedral boasts the largest ski centre in South America. But what if you...

Iguassu Falls!

Not much to say about Iguassu (or Iguaçu) other than go if you can. There isn’t much to recommend the cities on any side of the triple border between Brazil, Arentina and Paraguay, except that they are close to one of the greatest falls in the world. My only advice is to make sure you have at least 2 full days so as to have time to spend a day on each side of the falls–the Brazilian side offers the best overalll panoramic view, while the Argentinian side is much more intimate, with...

Manuel Antonio, Costa Rica – Back Door Monkeys

Warning: strpos() [function.strpos]: Offset not contained in string. in /var/www/blog/wp-content/themes/ISOMagazine/functions.php on line 317
Manuel Antonio is Costa Rica’s second most popular park (the first is a volcano). Right on the coast, it boasts some of the area’s best beaches, protected offshore islands home to thousands of birds, and so many monkeys and sloth you’re virtually guaranteed to run into them. All of which has made the park so popular that a few years ago authorities decided to upgrade facilities, moving the entrance to a more central spot. To get in, you ford a small estuary (rivulet at low tide), and although...

Monte Verde, Costa Rica – Of Bugs and Butterflies

Warning: strpos() [function.strpos]: Offset not contained in string. in /var/www/blog/wp-content/themes/ISOMagazine/functions.php on line 317
Before you begin to roll your eyes, let me assure you: butterflies are cool. Even if you don’t think you’ll find them cool—and I assure you, I didn’t—this place also has tarantulas, scorpions and seriously crazy-ass bugs you’ve never seen. For those of you who now think there’s no way in hell you’re going anywhere I’m talking about, give me a chance. The Monteverde Butterfly Garden has always been one of my biggest surprises—I wanted to think it wasn’t cool, but every time...
