The newly designed Phoenix Public Library card (a key chain card available now, too) comes with a travel benefit. Library cardholders can visit Phoenix Art Museum and receive $2 off general admission. Just present the library card when you purchase your tickets. The discount is for a maximum of four people per household, so you could save up to $8–almost the price of admission for one adult. There is no cost to apply for a library membership card if you’re a resident of Maricopa County....

CHECK OUT VANCOUVER MUSEUM

Warning: strpos() [function.strpos]: Offset not contained in string. in /var/www/blog/wp-content/themes/ISOMagazine/functions.php on line 317
If you’re looking for indoor entertainment during the rainy winter months, check out the Vancouver Museum, located at 1100 Chestnut Street in Vanier Park.  Also housed in this interesting structure that looks kind of like something from outer space, is the HR. MacMillan Space Centre. The Crab fountain sculpture out in front is a Vancouver landmark. The museum was founded back in 1894 with the object of cultivating “a taste for the beauties and refinements in life”. Collections of curios and...

Visiting Lucy at the Pacific Science Center

Lucy’s Legacy:  The Hidden Treasures of Ethiopia was a celebration of a culture that I knew nothing about, as well as a thought provoking exhibit of what might be the missing link in evolution from ape to man. But now I’m getting ahead of myself, so let’s go back to the beginning and I’ll take you along with me through the exhibit. Back in 1974, Dr. Donald Johanson discovered fossils in Hadar, Ethiopia. The fossils weren’t human, but they weren’t really an ape either, leading to...

Learn about the Leo Frank case before the exhibit ends this year.

Nothing to do with the holidays but ending December 31 is the Breman Museum’s exhibition, “Seeking Justice: The Leo Frank Case Revisited.” This is the truly tragic story of a murder that happened in 1913 that had a tremendous effect on Georgia and the nation.  Very briefly, Leo Frank was a manager at a pencil factory and was accused of murdering 13-year-old Mary Phagan in the basement of the factory. The eye-witness was an African-American janitor. It was a very racially charged...

At the Frye: Napoleon on the Nile

A current exhibit at the Frye Museum, Napoleon on the Nile, allows us a glimpse at the Middle East through the eyes of savants who traveled with Napoleon during his 1798 invasion of Egypt. Writers, philosophers, geographers, map makers, and artists, all provided written details of the journey, along with glimpses into every day life.  These works are represented in this exhibit through a number of plates from the Description de l’Egypte (a compendium from the early 1800’s), Orientalist...

This weekend. . . . . . get away from the city with a drive to the Columbia River Gorge, home of the Maryhill Museum where you can catch the final days of the Andy Warhol and Other Famous Faces exhibit. The Maryhill Museum is a castle-like structure on a 6,000 acre site overlooking the Columbia River Gorge, and is home to a collection of art ranging from early 20th century European art to more current Native American art.  The setting also includes beautiful gardens and grounds. Royal Palace on Dam Square; Interior

Warning: strpos() [function.strpos]: Offset not contained in string. in /var/www/blog/wp-content/themes/ISOMagazine/functions.php on line 317
After a series of restauration works the Royal palace is now open to the public. Visiting hours are because the palace is closed for visits when there are royal functions.  If you can’t find a central entrance doorway, it has nothing to do with you because there isn’t one. The palace started out as the City Hall. A monumental front door was left out deliberately in case an angry mob would storm the building in response to unpopular decisions taken by the City Council.  The entrance...

If you’ve read some of my earlier posts about museums, you may have thought, ”Eh, 9€ is a bit more than I’d like to spend on admission to see a bunch of old stuff.” Well! What if I told you that 1€ could open the doors to all of the State-run museums such as the Alte Pinakothek where you can explore a fabulous collection of European art, or enjoy some Greek and Roman architecture at the Glyptothek. Both of these museums are in great areas and are within walking distance...

Erotisch Museum: Naughty Dreams Come true

The Erotisch Museum or Erotic Museum is located where you would expect it: in the heart of the Red Light District. The red lighting over the entrance beckons you from afar. The museum showcases the history of erotica. Its five floors are chock-a-block with erotic art and goodies.  The first floor is like a proper art museum with glass cases and cabinets displaying art. The only difference between general art and art in this museum is that all carvings, statuettes and figurines are of men with exceptionally...

Museum Amstelkring: Our Lord in the Attic

Warning: strpos() [function.strpos]: Offset not contained in string. in /var/www/blog/wp-content/themes/ISOMagazine/functions.php on line 317
This Museum Amstelkring is a well-kept jewel. Climb the narrow back staircase to the secret room in the attic, known as Ons Lieve Heer op Solder, Our Lord in the Attic. The room is a stunning little church that recalls the days when Catholics weren’t allowed to practice their religion freely. Tucked away in a 17th century canal house with two smaller houses at the rear, the combined attics provide just enough space for the secret church and a box bedroom under the stairs for the residing priest....
