I love to go to antique and 2nd hand shops when I travel. It’s a chance to look in people’s closets — even if the closet is no longer there. You always get a sense of place because most antique shops are stocked with goods found through locals. I remember going to Florida and looking for pink flamingos and coming up short. That’s when I found out that live pink flamingos were never part of Florida’s heritage and could only be found in zoos. Ceramic pink flamings,...

If you missed out on the Space Needle at midnight, plan to see it next year. There are great vantage points all around the city – including your couch, where you can watch it from home.

Now that Christmas is behind us, have you made your plans for New Year’s Eve? The options narrow with each passing day, but even if you’ve waited till the last minute, here are some ideas to help you ring in 2009.
Make reservations for dinner out. Ok, all the really great spots may be booked up (or maybe not given the economy right now). I’d suggest taking a look at Open Table and see what is available. (This is a great site for reservations any time of year.)
Fireworks...

Alcohol in Coffeeshops
Warning: strpos() [function.strpos]: Offset not contained in string. in /var/www/blog/wp-content/themes/ISOMagazine/functions.php on line 317
When you read a review of a coffeeshop and it says that alcohol is served you can be sure that this is old information. From April 2008 all coffee shops had to comply with central government legislation. This meant that from this date on the sale of alcohol in coffeeshops was banned. Until this date the flouting of the no-alcohol law by Amsterdam’s 44 hash cafés had been widely tolerated. From 1st April the city’s coffee shops had to choose between selling either hash or alcohol –...

One of the brightest spots during the holiday season is the Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium and the annual Zoolights exhibit.
Zoolights is a huge holiday light display, with more than half a million lights. You’ll ooooh and aaaaah at over 70 displays with over 27 miles of lights arranged in traditional holiday displays, along with zoo and aquarium themed displays and local ones.
Wear warm clothes, as the nights are getting colder and I know you’ll want to spend some talking walking among...

500 Clown and The Elephant Deal

The comedy troupe 500 Clown uses fast-paced improv combined with circus arts to create a “where the heck are they going?” action-based, highly-charged performance. Lots of slapstick, planned and improved elements and audience inclusion that propels the performers into extremely physical and at times, high risk acrobatics.
The Elephant Deal explorers the gap between military life and civilian life in the United States. Taken from Man Equals Man and The Elephant Calf, it explores how the...

Sydney’s first small bar in a city laneway will open tonight. Known simply as Small Bar, the Sussex Lane drinking hole is part of a new movement to redevelop the city’s small spaces.
“Enlivening laneways is part of our Sustainable Sydney 2030 vision to create a more vibrant city centre,” said Lord Mayor Clover Moore MP.
“We hope other small businesses will follow suit and help reactivate laneways and forgotten spaces in the city centre.”
Small Bar is in line for the...

Holiday Parade of Lights

When you mention a Parade of Lights to a pleasure boater, they know what exactly you mean. You decorate your boat with lights and holiday decorations and take a slow harbor cruise so people can watch the brightly decorated crafts sail by.
This year, more than 50 power and sail boats should participate in annual Parade of Lights in suburban Alexandria, Virginia. Watch the floating parade along the Potomac River at the city’s historic waterfront.
Festivities also include pictures with...

Holiday shoppers dreaming of snow can find snow falling inside, yes…inside, Tysons Galleria shopping mall in Tysons Corner, Virginia, every day through Christmas Eve.
In one of the areas “coolest” promotions to attract shoppers, from November 22 until Christmas Eve, “snow” will actually fall from the ceiling, inside the upscale shopping and dining mall.
The first “snow show” will begin daily at 11:00 a.m., falling from the top level and descend through all three levels of the...

Goats lure North Georgia tourists

There you are driving along enjoying the mountain views and trying to ignore whatever the kids are doing in the backseat when the clamor becomes a little louder, “Those are sheep!” and “No they aren’t. It was goats on that roof. Dad, tell her that goats have horns.”
What? Indeed there are goats on the roof. This little place makes a great pit stop on your way north. There is specialty coffee for the adults and the kids can get a little exercise pedaling the stationary bicycle that moves...

McKenna Air Bar is coming! After a trial run last week, everyone is talking about the sky-high venue which will open for New Years Eve and some special dates in January.

The Erotisch Museum or Erotic Museum is located where you would expect it: in the heart of the Red Light District. The red lighting over the entrance beckons you from afar. The museum showcases the history of erotica. Its five floors are chock-a-block with erotic art and goodies.
The first floor is like a proper art museum with glass cases and cabinets displaying art. The only difference between general art and art in this museum is that all carvings, statuettes and figurines are of men with exceptionally...
