September arrives with a great Jazz Festival – Lisbon

The beginning of September comes with a promise of good jazz. The only Portuguese jazz magazine is bringing to Lisbon the second edition of Festival jazz.pt.
Most of the action takes place at Hot Club, the oldest and main jazz club in town. From Thursday to Saturday there will be two concerts a day, one at 22h, the other at 24h. But it’s more than just another concert. Most of them will be the presentation of new work.

From now until Labor Day, Anthology [Map] is selling $10 tickets to most shows!! That’s cheaper than going to see a movie! For more information and to buy tickets, visit their website.
The $10 tickets are for upper level seats, and in instances where acts are performing two shows, the tickets are only good for the 9:30 show.

While the 6th of August will bring a solo pianist (Kris Davis), the 13thhe will be playing along with Andrea Wolper and Ken Filiano (USA).
Friday 14thwe will have an unexpected visit of Catarina dos Santos at Praça do Museu (CCB). Back to Thursday evenings, Noah Premiger sax will heat up the night on the 20thof August, and this month will finish with Gonçalo Prazeres Quartet (Portuguese).

Out Jazz Festival – Now at Jardim do Campo Grande

As of this next Sunday, Out jazz Festival will be held at Jardim do Campo Grande, until the end of July. The festival will then keep going on to yet another garden – August will be held at Restelo (Parque dos Moinhos).
Jardim do Campo Grande (map) is right in the centre of Lisbon, between Campo Pequeno and Alvalade Stadium. You can get there easily by subway. The kick off is responsibility of António Bruheim Trio.

The first jazz recording I vividly recall hearing as a child was my father’s copy of Time Out, by jazz pianist Dave Brubeck. When I think of jazz singer Madeleine Peyroux, I think of the perfect music for a late evening, after things have quieted down. That period that transitions from the hustle of the day and a good evening meal, to the relaxation and quiet of the night.
