The beginning of September comes with a promise of good jazz. The only Portuguese jazz magazine is bringing to Lisbon the second edition of Festival jazz.pt. Most of the action takes place at Hot Club, the oldest and main jazz club in town. From Thursday to Saturday there will be two concerts a day, one at 22h, the other at 24h. But it’s more than just another concert. Most of them will be the presentation of new work. There’s also a great concert at Parque Mayer (map) with Joachim Kühn, Miroslav...

When You Think of Jazz Icons…Think Dave Brubeck

Warning: strpos() [function.strpos]: Offset not contained in string. in /var/www/blog/wp-content/themes/ISOMagazine/functions.php on line 317
The first jazz recording I vividly recall hearing as a child was my father’s copy of Time Out, by jazz pianist Dave Brubeck.  Now in Down Beat’s jazz hall of fame, Brubeck’s Time Out featured his most famous single, “Take Five”, which today is still one of the most recognizable jazz melodies ever recorded. The Dave Brubeck Quartet will be making a stop in Washington, DC at the Warner Theatre next month.  And it’s your chance to see this legendry jazz pianist  With alto...

Jazz on the Drive

Warning: strpos() [function.strpos]: Offset not contained in string. in /var/www/blog/wp-content/themes/ISOMagazine/functions.php on line 317
It’s a Wednesday evening and my friends and I are gathered at our favorite jazz venue on Commercial Drive, The Libra Room to enjoy another night of some of the best jazz you’ll hear in the city. The decor is bohemian, brick walls covered with paintings by local artists, candle-lit tables and a long bar lit by coloured lights.  There’s a patronage of old and young grooving to the cool jazz riffs of the Amanda Tosoff Trio and friends.  These talented young musicians were named best...

Seattle is a big music city, and when you visit I recommend that you carve out at least one evening to go to the Triple Door.  Located beneath Wild Ginger restaurant and across from Benaroya Hall, Triple Door provides you with two music venues at the same location. Mainstage is their premium venue and features national touring acts.  Once the Embassy Theatre, it has been restored and updated to a 300+ person performance room.  It’s a bit of retro-swank meets urban cool with a red-curtained...

Get Advanced Tickets to a Personal Favorite – The Jazzy Madeleine Peyroux

Warning: strpos() [function.strpos]: Offset not contained in string. in /var/www/blog/wp-content/themes/ISOMagazine/functions.php on line 317
When I think of jazz singer Madeleine Peyroux, I think of the perfect music for a late evening, after things have quieted down. That period that transitions from the hustle of the day and a good evening meal, to the relaxation and quiet of the night.  And she’s bringing a voice that has been compared to, or at least seems closely reminiscent, of the late jazz great, Billie Holiday, to perform at GW’s Lisner Auditorium in Washington, DC in June. While tickets for Madeleine Peyroux don’t...
