With Christmas, not only the decorations on the streets of Lisbon are a must see/do. Check a local pastelaria and try some of the nicest sweets they are serving now. Sometimes I wonder why they are not available all year long. One of my favourites is Fatia Dourada (Golden Slice) – a slice of fried bread with sugar and cinnamon. Unfortunately, although I keep asking for one all year long, most of the times (not to say always) I’m joked upon. Others that you should keep in mind are: -         ...

During this festive season, with all the special music events and preparations for Christmas, the Holy Rosary Cathedral,  Vancouver’s main Catholic church, has something special to celebrate.  Today,  December 8, 2009 is the Cathedral’s 109th birthday!  And over the Christmas holidays there will be special masses as well a music concerts held there. The Cathedral is one of Vancouver’s heritage buildings.  The parish began in June 1885 when Father Patrick Fay, chaplin to...

Going around Lisbon by taxi is sometimes hard, time consuming and expensive. The traffic is as bad as any other big city, especially on rush hours. Even to get out of the city, you have to hit the right timing or you’re bound to sit for hours… Now, you can chose for a new service Lisbon is offering, the moto taxi. The first thing that may come into mind in the lack of comfort and cold or hot, depending on the season. May I remind you, though, that we have quite a mild climate and not a lot of...

Insight Media Services has produced a series of Great City Guides on DVD to help you plan your trip, or even to buy as a souvenier of the trip you made to any one of these ‘great cities’.    I just viewed “Vancouver & Victoria: Canada’s Western Wonders!” and found it both informative and enjoyable with a great deal of useful information for the traveler. The DVD also includes Whistler which is host city with Vancouver  for the coming 2010 Olympic Winter Games...

Alles ging aan flarden, Everything is in Tatters, is the title of the war diary written by Klaartje de Zwarte-Walvisch between March and July 1943. She wrote about her days in transit camp Vught. She told about fathers crying when children were picked out for deportation, about ill-treatment of elderly people. She also brought new details to light. How Chopin’s Funeral March was played when women returned from dragging around stones and bricks for no reason at all. An exercise only meant to bait...

The stories of some cities simply beg to be told as much in images as well as words when their history encompasses so much vivid change and reinvention of  urban landscape and populations.  That is exactly what Arva Moor Parks’ latest edition of her book  Miami, The Magic City does so well, crafting a narrative synergy that draws the reader  back from the text description into the graphic image, or conversely from the images that point you onward to read the fuller, in depth story...

Today,November 11,  as in other cities across Canada, it was a day of remembering,  “Remembrance Day”.  In Vancouver, great crowds gathered at the cenotaph in Victory Square for the ceremony honouring those men and women who have served in Canada’s armed forces,  many of whom did not return from the wars, or were wounded.  These include those currently serving in Afghanistan.  Young and old paid tribute at the cenotaph and laid wreaths at the foot of the monument. The Victory...

Nestled on the north-east corner of Georgia and Burrard Streets,  dwarfed beside the surrounding glass sky-scrapers, is one of Vancouver’s most charming heritage buildings:  The Christ Church Cathedral.  This stone-built Gothic Revival church was built in 1889 on property purchased from Canadian Pacific Railway.  It was originally nicknamed “The Root House” because at first only the lower part of the church was built and services were held in it.  But on July 28, 1894 the corner...

The 11th of November we celebrate Saint Martin’s day with the fist chestnuts and young wine. We gather around a table or a fire place outside telling stories, eating roasted chestnuts and drinking jeropiga, the first wine of the year. This is our Magusto, a popular festivity. Legend says that a knight, on the cold days of November, helped a poor man giving him half of his coat. Just after that, the sun started to shine as if it was a latte summer day. Today we still expect what we call St. Martins...

One notable feature of many Miami area beaches are some of the structures built there over nearly half a century for anything from life guard facilities to public venues.  Many of these in turn reflect a face of the city’s architectural past and style.  One such that has made its reappearance to function for some new purposes in its interior but with its original exterior gloriously reborn is the historic 10th Street Auditorium and Beach Patrol Headquarters. One of the most intruiging historical sites in B.C. is the Ross Bay Cemetery in Victoria.  It opened in 1873 and is one of the best examples of a Victorian cemetery, noted for its design and pastoral setting by the seaside.  Bordered by Ross Bay with panoramic views of the ocean right across to the mountains of the Olympic Penninsula in the U.S.A., the cemetery encompasses 27.5 acres with about 28,000 internments, including many famous characters out of B.C. history.   The winding walks, under...

Illusion and reality are a potent topic for any writer to dissect — tell-all books on celebrities living and dead are standard fare and a media staple of our time.  What is more unusual is a book about a city and its times from infancy to maturity — well, sort of — and the people and events that were key in shaping it and have left their imprint to the present.  This type of intelligent tell-all about a place can get you dropping everything else to sit down and learn a...

If you’re visiting Steveston B.C. touring the old canneries and boat builders you should take a side-trip to visit Finn Slough at the foot of No. 4 Road in Richmond.  Back in 1890 a group of Finnish settlers arrived in Richmond.  They worked in coal mines and logging camps to save money to buy land by the Fraser River so they could work as fishermen.  Finn Slough, (pronouncned ‘slew’) also known as Gilmore or Tiffin Slough, became their new home.  Their first houses were built...

The first competition held a Olympia, Greece, had nothing to do with ‘going for the gold’.  In fact, it was a chariot race, held to determined who would win the hand of a beautiful princess and inherit her father’s kingdom.  The first historically recorded Olympic Games began in 776 BC.  The Games were held every four years in July or August, according to the full moon.  From 776 BC, lists of winners were engraved on slabs of stone, known as stele, at the stadium, and thus began...

The Brooklyn Bridge is such an iconic sight on the NYC skyline.  It’s no surprise that even though it spans the East River into Brooklyn, it’s more popular with visitors than some of Manhattan’s more heavily advertised tourist attractions.  One reason is that the bridge’s sheer grandeur and architectural marvel are still as stunning today as when the first horse and buggy made the maiden crossing. Historic Photos of the Brooklyn Bridge To really appreciate its historical significance and...

Hofjes are pretty difficult to find. They lie hidden behind doors that look like front doors to ordinary canal houses. Hofjes are leafy courtyards lined by pretty houses with serene gardens. Most of them were built towards the end of 16th century by wealthy protestant merchants. Up till then the Catholic Church had provided subsidized housing for the poor and elderly. But when Amsterdam no longer sided with Catholic Spain, catholisism was no longer the desired religion. Catholic churches were forbidden...

A view of the Markfield Beam Engine Central London gets all the headlines. But some of the most interesting architecture lies outside the centre – particularly in the field of modern domestic architecture. So I was interested to read Diamond Geezer’s account of his Open House weekend – spent in Highgate and Tottenham, rather than the architectural fleshpots of Westminster and the City. The Markfield Beam Engine [Tottenham Hale, South Tottenham or Seven Sisters tube] is an...
