“Joy is the well made object” is a statement Haida artist Bill Reid often quoted. Reid, of mixed Scottish/Haida heritage was one of Canada’s most renown artists recognized well-making as a central quality in the work of his ancestors, one he equated with their humanity and historical achievement, which he brought forward as part of his own continuity. Reid, known as the Master of Haida Art, had a passion for making things cine his childhood and making them well...

Oktoberfest: 9 Days and Counting!!!
Warning: strpos() [function.strpos]: Offset not contained in string. in /var/www/blog/wp-content/themes/ISOMagazine/functions.php on line 317
Hello Everyone!
Okoberfest is only 9 days away! 9 short, little days until you’re singing with the locals, drinking maß after maß of delicious Bavarian beer as you chow down on all the goodies! The Oktoberfest takes place at the Theresienweisen and is a mix of beer tents, carnival rides, games and food stands. Now, if you’re planning on getting into the tents, I suggest getting there to wait in line at around 10am or so as doors open at 11am. Some people get there even earlier, but...

Well, I’m giving you a voice!
I opened an email account just for you lovely readers out there to ask questions, suggest topics, or give feedback! After reviewing...

A Quickie Guide to German Beer

If you’re in Germany, especially Munich, you’re going to be at the center of one of the greatest beer cultures in the world. So, as someone who may not know as much about beer as the Germans surrounding me, I found it helpful to know a little bit about what I was tasting.
There are four main categories of beers: Starkbier, Helles, Pilz and Weissbier.
Starkbier is known for being incredibly heavy, pratically a meal in itself. Monks in Munich created Starkbier so that they would be able...

The other day my boyfriend and I were going to have dinner at one of our favorite traditional Bavarian restaurants. As we were standing and looking for a table, a few angry American tourists who over heard us speaking English, came over and began to huff about how the service was terrible and how they would advise no one to ever eat there again. Now the thing is, I know that this place would ruffle the feathers of tourists who aren’t used to the Bavarian directness. Here are a few cultural...

Save Yourself! The Top Tourist Traps
Warning: strpos() [function.strpos]: Offset not contained in string. in /var/www/blog/wp-content/themes/ISOMagazine/functions.php on line 317
Going to any city in Europe where tourists from all over the world are ready to drop large wads of cash, you’re sure to have your share of tourist traps. Let’s start off with a little story…
Once upon a time there was a young gal named Noka who had a couple of visitors from the States. They really wanted to go out for a “true Bavarian” meal and then ended up paying 20€ for a wienerschnitzel even though it had said 14€ in the German language menu. Confused, she...

Walking around the city, you’ll notice that Munich has retained much of its small town charm when it comes to shopping. You buy your meat at the butcher, bread at the baker, shoes at the shoe shops, wines at the wine shops, the list goes on and on. While it may take a bit of getting used to, I have grown quite accustomed and appreciative of these specialty shops. Talk to the owners or employees and they’ll tell you, in detail, why the Brie cheese made from farm #1 is better than the Gouda...

Die Geschwister-Scholl

There’s a place that most tourists walk past, without any idea that they are walking past one of the greatest points of the anti-Nazi movement: Der Geschwister-Scholl Platz.
In June of 1942, a group of university students at the Ludwig-Maximillians University, including siblings Hans and Sophie Scholl, formed a small group called the White Rose, which was an anti-Nazi, resistance group. In all accuracy, Sophie joined the group after she learned of her brother’s involvement. The group...

So, you’re walking along Marienplatz, enjoying the general splendor of the city, or you’re standing on some random bar bench swinging your beer back and forth–then suddenly!– you get this terrible headache/stomach ache/heartburn/sneeze attack or something equally vacation-killing. Unlike some other countries, you can’t walk into a local drugstore and pick up some pain killers or cold medicine, you have to get it from the local pharmacy, or, Apotheke. Luckily, there are...

So, you’ve landed in Munich, picked up your luggage and you ask yourself, “Well, how do I get to my hotel? How do I get around? Easy. Munich’s public transport system can take you anywhere you want to go, and with a few tips you should be able to easily get your tickets and take on the city.
First off, the city of Munich is divided into several rings, the first two are the general city center and those 3 and above get further away from that center. The more rings you want to go through, the...

Essential German for any Traveler

When traveling to another country, it’s important to have at least a couple of phrases or words under your belt. Even though most people in Munich do speak some amount of English, they appreciate those who try to speak at least a few words of German, rather than assuming they speak English. You will definitely get a better response by starting out with a few words before you break out the English.
Hello: Hallo
Goodbye: Wiedersehen, Tschüss (pronounced “choos”), Ciao
Yes: Ja
No: Nein...

Marienplatz City Center

Drawing millions of tourists a year, Marienplatz is the central square located in the center of Munich – and has been since 1158. Popular during all times of the year, its Gothic city hall houses the city council as well as the famous Glockenspiel, which chimes daily at 11 a.m., noon, and 5 p.m. Figures in the Glockenspiel move to the Schläffertanz, which was originally performed in the Marienplatz in 1517 to observe the end of the plague.
Marienplatz acquired its name in 1638 after the Mariensäule...
