For anyone interested in ecology, be sure to put the Lynn Canyon Ecology Centre in North Vancouver on your lists of things to do when you are visiting Vancouver. If you live here, and have never taken the time to visit, make sure you do. It’s a great place to take the kids for an outing, and for hiking enthusiasts there’s always the challenge of a hike (rain or shine) across the suspension bridge and along the various trails of the Canyon.
The Lynn Canyon officially opened way back in 1912....

Vacation Solution: Farmers’ Markets

When we go on vacation my husband and I love to treat ourselves to expensive dinners at fine restaurants. There is nothing like getting dressed up and having a romantic meal complete with a nice bottle of wine and rich desserts. However for lunch we often find that we want a quick bite rather than a long meal so that we can do and see more during the day. It doesn’t take long before fast food lunches and fine dining in the evening take their toll on our energy, our waistlines, and our...

As soon as I moved to Houston people started telling me, “Wait for the bluebonnets! You have to go and take a picture in the bluebonnets!” Bluebonnets being, of course, the Texas state flower. This spring tradition requires that one drive to any number of places (“go north toward Humble”, “head to Fredricksburg”, etc.) to find a field of bluebonnets and get your (or your kids’ or your dog’s) picture taken. Most living rooms in Texas, I am...

If you think it’s time trade your street shoes for some hiking boots, a day (or a weekend) at Big Thicket National Preserve may just be the ticket!
Sometimes there is too much to do in a city. When I lived in Alaska my playground was The Great Outdoors. Now that I have “everything urban” at my fingertips, I find that I occasionally want nothing at my fingertips but trees and trails. It’s times like those when it’s the ideal time to visit Big Thicket.

If I said “Miracle Strip,” those who grew up or vacationed in Panama City Beach, Fla., during certain decades know exactly what I’m talking about.
Up until its closing in 2004, Miracle Strip Amusement Park was one of the places to spend the afternoon or evening at after a morning or day on the beach.
Now you can re-experience some of Miracle Strip at Pier Park (map) thanks to Teddy and Jenny Meeks.
And it all started with a carousel.
To make a long story short, the Meeks took a chance by purchasing...

Did you know that San Francisco’s famed Chinatown was actually built after the 1906 earthquake as a marketing ploy to attract tourists back to the city? Or that the population of the city went from 800 people in 1848 to over 30,000 one year later. The reason? Gold was discovered in “them thar hills.” This and other fun San Francisco facts are part of the package when you take a stroll through the city with FOOT Comedy Walking Tours.

Let’s go back in time to 1977 in Cleveland, Ga., where artist Xavier Roberts created handmade dolls he called “Little People,” and sold them at the nearby Unicoi State Park (map) gift shop.
To make a long story short, he didn’t call them “Little People” for long. In fact, Roberts changed the name to Cabbage Patch Kids for something more unique and thus, history was created.
If you were a child of the ‘80s, more than likely you had a Cabbage Patch doll (or two, if you were lucky.)...

I’m not really a hockey fan, preferring instead the more graceful sport of figure skating, but I wanted to attend a 2010 Paralympic Games event. So my friend and I went to see a sledge hockey game. It may not be the rough and tumble, rowdy game that regular hockey can be, but it didn’t take me long to become a fan!
Sledge hockey is just as exciting and skillful. Two things stand out: the physicality and the speed. Players smash each other almost as much as NHL players do,...
