Time for Frühlingsfest!

One of my absolute favorite festivals is almost here! Known as the smaller sister of the Oktoberfest, Frühlingsfest has become near and dear to my heart for a few reasons. First, it’s so much fun that I could just burst at the thought of it. Second, it’s an excuse to wear my dirndl. And third, it is just like Oktoberfest but minus the gazillion tourists and obscenely long lines to enter tents or get a table. Founded in 1965, this relatively new festival is chock full of everything German...

King Tutankhamun Makes a Stop in Munich

Landing upon the throne at age 8, Egyptian King Tutankhamun ruled for a mere 10 years, which, let’s face it, what can you really do as king at the age of 8? Even at his tender age, the proverbial “boy king” achieved a lot during his short reign. This kid even had a wife and possibly two children! Of course, during his early years, he was greatly led by his advisers, but over all, he restored the peace and harmony which his uncle’s reign had taken away. It is still uncertain...

The Hunt for Easter Eggs

Easter egg hunts are just plain fun, and tasty (especially if the eggs are chocolate or filled with candies). Okay, it’s even great to seek out painted eggs of the hard-boiled variety (sort of). Anyway if you haven’t been invited to a private event, there’s still time to join one of the open-to-the-public hunts. Bring a basket or a bag, just in case.
In Irvine, Mariners Church is presenting free egg hunts for children up to 10 years of age at 3 PM and 7 PM. And between 2 PM and...

Sunday Walks with Ruthaki #3
Gastown is the historic centre of Vancouver where the first settlement began back in 1870. As you stroll along the cobbled streets you’ll see various plaques marking historic buildings or events. Gastown got it’s name from a feisty old character named John “Gassy” Jack Deighton (he liked to talk a lot!). He build the first saloon to accommodate the workers of a nearby sawmill. The earliest residents of Gastown were mainly mill workers but...

The weather cooperated nicely today, providing clear, blue skys. But the strong winds may cause some of the blooms to be blown away prematurely, so if you want to see the trees in all their glory, it’s best to make a visit to the National Mall as soon as you can.
