Weekend Art Market in Roma

Weekend Art Market in Roma
Browsing the various markets and weekend tianguis located throughout the capital is a favorite activity for visitors to Mexico City. One of my favorites is the Corredor de Arte Colonia Roma, a weekend art market that stretches along Avenida Álvaro Obregón in Mexico City’s colonia Roma Norte. The market is a pleasant place to explore and worth a visit whether you’re actually looking to purchase anything or not. Vendors, many of them the artists themselves, display a variety of crafts,...

The Netherlands and Drugs

The Netherlands and Drugs
... traditional cannabis grown in Morocco or Pakistan. The Dutch soft drugs market relies increasingly on home-grown cannabis. Depending on the quality, coffee shop owners pay between € 3,500 and 5,500 per kilo to cannabis growers. In 2008, 720 Dutch coffeeshops sold some 255,000 kilograms of soft drugs, mostly grown in the Netherlands. Police estimate that only 20 to 40 per cent of the Dutch marijuana is sold locally. The bulk is exported. The Dutch tax authority receives some € 400 million on...

Cannabis or Cappuccino in Coffee Shop De Kuil?

Cannabis or Cappuccino in Coffee Shop De Kuil?
coffee shop De Kuil looks very much like a bruin café but is a coffeeshop aka hash bar. Bruin (brown) café is the Dutch answer to what a Londoner would call pub. It is the place where people from the neighbourhood gather, gossip, snack and drink. The name brown café refers to the dark, often wooden interior and the smoke stained walls. This is the place to go if you want to drink coffee. Coffeeshop can mean only one thing in the Netherlands; hash bar. It is a place where cannabis is openly smoked...

Chocolate crepes at Epoch Coffee Bar & Desserterie

Chocolate crepes at Epoch Coffee Bar & Desserterie
A cold spell enveloped Hong Kong over night this week and has made me crave for all my favourite comfort foods! As I am in the middle of moving to outlying island Discovery Bay (map) and don’t have internet connection set up at the new flat, I find myself shacked up in coffee houses or anywhere I can steal a bit of wifi connection for just a few minutes. Today was especially colder than most days in the city and so I decided to seek refuge in one of my favourite places to gorge on yummy desserts....

Writing on the Wall in Coffee Shop Hill Street Blues

Writing on the Wall in Coffee Shop Hill Street Blues
Amsterdam has over three hundred coffee shops. They serve frothy cappuccino and fragrant tea, but that’s not why people go to coffeeshops. Dutch coffeeshops are places that sell hash and marihuana openly. This doesn’t mean that possession of drugs is legal in the Netherlands. Possession of small quantities is decriminalised. Advertising marihuana is not allowed so you will have to go the bar and ask Mr Dealer  for the menu, which shows a variety of weed and hash and their prices. On average...

Mr Dealer Shows His wares

Green Place coffeeshop is a newcomer. It opened only four years ago and looks like an ordinary cafe. If you’re new to the weed scene, this coffeeshop is a good place to smoke your first joint. They also serve lots of different teas and hot chocolate. It is also a good place to stop if you don’t smoke pot. After the introduction of the non-smoking rules on 1 July 2008, smokers and non-smokers cannot mix. That’s why Green Place has a separate area for smokers. Listen to a mix of...
