Punahou School’s “Carnival Before Time: A Prehistoric Paradise”

The Punahou carnival is one of the island’s favorite weekend celebrations.  As it only happens once a year, it’s the kind of thing many locals — especially Punahou alumni like myself — look forward to. The tradition began back in 1932, when, during the Depression, Academy students hosted an “Oahuan Campus carnival” to raise money for the yearbook. Held on Rice Field (which fronts Wilder Street), it took place early one Friday afternoon in April and lasted until...

Coming up – Notting Hill Carnival

Coming up – Notting Hill Carnival
Notting Hill carnival is the loudest party in London. Not perhaps by decibels alone – though there are 40 static sound systems and huge numbers of steel pan and samba bands; it’s the brilliant colours, too, which shout loudly at you as soon as you arrive. In fact, the carnival is a sensory overdose. The smell of Caribbean food, the beat of the music, the movement of the dance – it’s practically overwhelming until you learn to go with the flow and just enjoy it. The  carnival...

Lisbon Carnival

Lisbon Carnival
Far from many other carnivals in Portugal (not to mention the obvious Brazil), the Lisbons XII carnival Parade is rather simple, but great to attend if you’re around the area. There will be music and dancing and lots of costumes… and street performing… The parade will start at Praça do Município (map) and will go around the old part of town, passing through Praça do Comércio, Rua da Prata and ending at Praça D. Pedro IV. It’s free and you can just pop in along the way. When: 16th of...

The Punahou Carnival

The Punahou Carnival
If it is February, then it is time for The Punahou carnival. Much more than a school fair, this carnival has been a vital element in the lives of Hawai’i residents since the mid nineteen-thirties, a shared memory among every generation.  Honolulu residents sniff the air in anticipation of the smell of hot malasadas, Portuguese bean soup, teri burgers sizzling on an open grill, the tang of freshly spun cotton candy, the simple joy of melted butter about to be splashed on fresh corn on the cob or...

Oktoberfest: 9 Days and Counting!!!

... maß of delicious Bavarian beer as you chow down on all the goodies! The Oktoberfest takes place at the Theresienweisen and is a mix of beer tents, carnival rides, games and food stands. Now, if you’re planning on getting into the tents, I suggest getting there to wait in line at around 10am or so as doors open at 11am. Some people get there even earlier, but it’s up to you. Depending on the tent, you could wait anywhere in line from 0 mins to 1.5 hours! Of course, unless you get there...
