Bird watching, photography and nature hikes throughout Hong Kong

The weather has been getting finer this past week and I find myself getting the urge to take a nice hike somewhere in Hong Kong. Mind you, I tend to get this sudden desire every few months but never seem to go beyond Dragon’s Back trail in Shek O (pictured above). The reason for this is that I don’t really know where to go to take these walks. I only know of the ones that I went on with my family as a child and don’t really remember much about them. This brings me to my post for the...

If you’ve ever traveled to Verona, chances are you visited Juliet’s House, the Arena to see an opera, and the main piazzas complete with giant hanging whale bone. But if you venture just out of the city center, you’ll find one of Northern Italy’s most extravagant churches…it’s like no other.
San Zeno was built in 1120-1138 and is adorned with an impressive rose window which symbolized the Wheel of Fortune with figures that show the rise and fall of human luck,...

New opening – the Darwin Centre at the Natural History Museum

The Natural History Museum has acquired a new attraction. An amazing new building, with a smooth curving sufrace like a silk-worm coccoon or a weirdly lopsided egg or a huge sea-worn boulder, has gone up in South Kensington – a defiantly modern space against the neo-romanesque pastiche of the museum itself, it also manages to suggest natural forms, rather than the man-made world.
From the outside, all you’ll see is a glass wall – it’s inside this glass enclosure that the...

Five Favourite Ways to Enjoy Edinburgh in the Autumn
Warning: strpos() [function.strpos]: Offset not contained in string. in /var/www/blog/wp-content/themes/ISOMagazine/functions.php on line 317
As Edinburgh winds down into a slumber to recover from the Edinburgh Fringe Festival madness, it’s easy to want to just hide away in a cafe and await winter’s arrival. However, there’s five different places that I like to spend my time during autumn in Edinburgh:
The Water of Leith
Everyone knows I’m a huge fan of the Water of Leith and it’s one of the best walks one can do in Edinburgh. As the leaves turn colour and a chill fills the air, there’s no better...

Plum TV Miami: Taking the City’s Pulse and Profile

How local urbanites work, play and celebrate are all part of the broader picture that Plum TV Miami deftly puts together every week on local cable Channel 5. While most big cities may have some kind of daytime show on city happenings, the very plugged-in format and approach of this cable show in its various venues (aside from Miami, there’s also Aspen, the Hamptons, Martha’s Vineyard, Nantucket, Sun Valley, Telluride, Vail) marks it out as something unusual from our perspective...

Most of the action takes place at Hot Club, the oldest and main jazz club in town. From Thursday to Saturday there will be two concerts a day, one at 22h, the other at 24h. But it’s more than just another concert. Most of them will be the presentation of new work.
There’s also a great concert at Parque Mayer (map) with Joachim Kühn, Miroslav...

Last Saturday my family and I were looking for something fun to do. Since we moved here, we hadn’t been to Elitch Gardens Theme Park [map] and the kids have been begging us to take them there. So, on the spur of the moment, we bought fall passes for all of us and have already used them twice. The fall pass was only $10 more than a regular ticket, so they have already paid for themselves.
I love theme parks. I always have and Elitch Gardens did not disappoint! The first day we went, we decided...

I continue my coverage of St. Petersburg’s streets. The city should be watched on foot, so I invite you to follow me in walking around its streets.
Today we’re in the very centre, on a walking steet that streches just from the main thoroughfare, the Nevsky prospect. It’s Malaya (Small) Konyushennaya.
Founded in late XVIII century, not much older than the city itself, it was called after the imperial stables. But there is nothing left today in the street to refer to the origin...

The Subway… Fast, Cheap and Reliable

The subway (or metro) in Buenos Aires is one of the best ways to get around. It is known as “subte” (subterraneo, which means underground). Taking the subte is a fast, cheap and reliable way to get around Buenos Aires.
Though many of the main city sights are within walking distance of the centre, there a couple of places for you will need to use public transport. Subte is my favourite means of transportation in the city, and the main lines are always getting extended.
There are five...

We boarded at the Waterfront Station at noon, finding comfortable seats in the spacious car. There’s plenty of leg room and space for bikes and luggage. The ride to Vancouver International Airport (YVR) will take approximately 25...
