Review: Traditional Japanese Food at Koi
On the refurbished part of Alcântara, on a gallery of an ancient factory, Koi is much more than another Japanese restaurant serving sushi and sashimi.
Its name, Koi, means love and may well express the dedication of a former pub and fashion photographer that decided to follow his dream 4 years ago. As you enter the place you may feel his dedication and love to it through the way you are welcomed, served and obviously the most important, by the food you are given.
The walls too show some of his art...

Taking Advantage of Last Minute Promotions
All that’s bad brings new great opportunities… If you’re travelling around Europe, bear in mind that Lisbon has its own.
I can´t seam to understand if Tourism in Lisbon (or in Portugal, for that matter) is down or up. Some people say it’s definitely low… The fact is that it’s almost impossible to get a rented car for the next day, in August. I’ve tried a couple of times for jobs I had in the north and in the south of Portugal. I ended up taking my own car.
This said, I took some time...

As a reminder, to all of you who may have missed my last post in May about OutJazz, you still have the opportunity to sit at one of Lisbon’s beautiful gardens and listen to live Jazz for free.
Since last May, OutJazz has been bringing music to everyone, gathering people at some of the most interesting parks in Lisbon.
Untill September, jazz will take over a main garden in the city, a different one each month. The music will play at the sound of nature, in the open air.
So, as you may be walking...

Sunset Moments at Cascais
I recently posted two articles on great places for a drink by sunset and even to take it on into the night. Arola is set in Sintra, amid the luxurious green mountain, while 38º41’ is one of the bars to go to these days, around Belém Tower, at the majestic Altis Belém Hotel&Spa.
Still, if you’re around Cascais you shouldn’t think you didn’t get lucky in this matter. On the contrary. Farol Design Hotel is one of the nicest hotels you can find in Lisbon area and they too have a bar with...

CS Vintage Lisbon Hotel
Since last May, there are five more stars shinning in the city centre. CS Vintage Lisbon Hotel is placed between Avenida da Liberdade and Principe Real (map), two steps from some of the most important places you may want to see in Lisbon – Bairro Alto, Principe Real, Avenida da Liberdade, Restauradores and Baixa (downtown area).
This charming Hotel shows contemporary lines with clear vintage influences. Its luxurious atmosphere doesn’t hide the fact that it was build on top of a building from...

August Jazz in Lisbon
Lisbon in August wouldn’t be the same anymore without Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation Festival, Jazz in August. On the 27th edition, again, the program will reflect the latest tendencies of the contemporary jazz.
Most of the concerts will be held on the gardens of the Foundation, right in the middle of Lisbon, by Praça de Espanha (map). Among the many names you’ll be able to see and hear, John Surman (sax and clarinet) and Jack DeJohnette (drums and piano) are just two of them.
It will also be...

Irresistible Eating at Bairro Alto Hotel
The first contemporary boutique Hotel in Lisbon, Bairro Alto Hotel, stands right in the heart of the old part of town, at Praça Luís de Camões (map). This is one of the most vibrant parts of town with great shopping, restaurants and nightlife.
This hip-chick place to stay in town has been placing a new offer on their restaurant that is definitely worth a look. Flores Restaurant, on your right hand side as you enter the lobby, is one of my top Lisbon choices when it comes to contemporary Portuguese...

Seeing Lisbon from a different perspective
The gorgeous yellow tram that goes up and down Lisbon’s hills has been jealous with the new neighbours passing by that tourist have been choosing.
Even for those who live in the city, these new ways to visit it has been full of surprises.

Review: Eating by the River at Cafetaria Mensagem
After visiting Feitoria Restaurant last January, I could hardly wait for the good weather to visit Cafetaria Mensagem. This is the second restaurant of the exquisite Altis Belém Hotel&Spa. As Feitoria, this too is under the guidance of Chef José Cordeiro and has a clear influence of the Hotel main motive – Discoveries.
The Chef has worked in many top restaurants, from London to Tokyo, and made it back to Portugal to receive a Michelin Star in 2004/2005 and again in 2005/2006 (while chef...

Different Ice Cream at Baixa
Since 2005 Fragoleto has set very different standards from most of the other industrial ice cream shops. They combine the Italian ice cream tradition with innovation. Plus they only use top quality fresh ingredients. Colorants and preservatives are not used on any of their products. This has made this Ice cream shop, located right in the centre of Lisbon, at Rua da Prata (map), to gain recognition as a gourmet shop. It has already been considered one of the best in Europe.

Review: Midori – Japanese Food in Great Style at Sintra
The first Japanese restaurant in Lisbon is still one of the top choices in town. As you arrive to the fancy and luxurious Penha Longa Resort, you get a felling of what you’re up to. Still, what I expected to be a calm dinner, turned out to be quite a busy one.
Entering the Penha Longa Hotel in its grandeur and chick atmosphere is half the fun. On the first floor, the first Japanese restaurant in Lisbon (from 1993) is still attracting Portuguese sushi addicts. And although I suspected it would be...
