Houston: Openings, Closings and Reopenings

Photo by Joshua PayneI’ve been writing about Houston for iStopOver magazine for about a year now, and since that time I’ve eaten many delicious meals, drunk many tasty cocktails and visited some of the best spots this city has to offer. Like any large city there have been changes, with old venues closing and new ones opening in their place. I wanted to take a quick moment to update you on some changes I’ve become aware of since covering some of these hot (and ultimately not-so-hot) spots.

Angelika Film Center

Since I first wrote about this downtown indie film house, the Angelika Film Center (map) has closed. Word has it that a new cinema will open in its place by summer 2012. Like many Houstonians, I have high hopes that a new independent film house will rise from the ashes of the suddenly-closed theater.

Sugarcane ECOcktails

After my first visit to Sugarcane (on their opening night) I must admit to not returning. It simply wasn’t in a location convenient enough for my husband and me to visit on a weeknight happy hour, our favorite time to grab a cocktail. The owners plan on re-opening their former wine bar–The Corkscrew–although no firm plans or location have been announced.

CuraYoga

I recently wrote about one of my very favorite yoga studios in Houston, CuraYoga (formerly JennYoga). Thankfully they are still up and running, but they have closed their Tanglewood Studio at Tanglewood Studio at 5757 Woodway, Suite 150 (map). Fortunately we can still get our asana on at their River Oaks and Heights studios, located at 3641-C Westheimer Rd. (map) and Heights Arts District Studio at 1824 Spring (map), respectively.

Agora Coffeehouse

The bad news is that Agora experienced a terrible fire back in October; the good news is that they have rebuilt and are back up and running. The new coffee house is beautiful and it’s still one of my favorite places to go to have a cup of coffee, read and write. They are located at 1712 Westheimer (map).
