Art After Dark: Show Me The Bunny

In honor of the approaching Year of the Rabbit, the Honolulu Academy of Arts will be rushing in the Chinese New Year with a memorable Art After Dark experience.

This month’s theme will be “Show me the Bunny!” and it will be held this evening, Friday, January 28th, 2011 from 6-9 p.m.   The Academy took a two-month break hosting break but will begin this new year with a bang.  While the function is open to all ages, the usual crowd is 21+, and most of these folks end up going out to bars downtown once the party shuts down at its fairly early hour at 9:30 p.m.

There will be a drum performance and a lion dance at 7:30 and 8:30 pm, but the main entertainment will be New York’s DJ Roxy “Cottontail.”  Fitting, don’t you think?  Her skills, talent and varied tastes have helped her rise to the top of the promoting, DJing, hip-hop and fashion worlds. Her signature style has deep roots in punk, electro, dance, house, hip-hop, reggae an rock.

In the Banyan Courtyard you can make your own Chinese New Year’s craft to take home.  Local, modern zen artist Andy Lee, whose art combines Eastern and Western ways of thinking and painting, will be on hand to demonstrate his unique style of pop culture rendered in traditional calligraphic brushstrokes.   On display will be works by the Eight Eccentrics of Yangzhou School, who have been considered China’s new school of art.

Food will be available by Town and Downtown and a small selection of drinks and cocktails will be poured until 9 pm (Academy members can head to their own full bar — a new treat this year).
