Sydney’s Historic Bellevue House Gets New Waterfront Cafe
A new café inside the historic Bellevue House is giving discerning foodies another reason to visit the Sydney inner-city suburb of Glebe.
The Blackwattle Café offers views of the tranquil Blackwattle Bay, a delicious complement to the interior of this fully restored home and the eatery’s meals.

Bellevue House before its restoration
It cost some $1.32 million to restore the 19th Century home, and many man-hours, but this labour of love has clearly been worthwhile. After years of neglect council threatened to demolish the building in the 70s, but the community was having none of it. Now they can frequent the historic site while enjoying meals prepared with fresh local produce.
The roast chicken, fontina cheese, and tomato toasted sandwich and duck egg omelette with leek, mushroom, and gruyere cheese seem like indulgent ways to start the day. If you arrive later for lunch you’ll be tempted by pork and pistachio pie, chicken and corn fritters, and Greek lamb kofta. That fancy toasted sandwich even makes another appearance. The evening nibbles menu makes it a great spot to frequent if you’re feeling peckish after a movie. It’s not open late by Sydney standards though, particularly during winter, so make sure you set out early.
The restoration of Bellevue House has been some time coming, and a meal in the Blackwattle Café is a great way to appreciate all that’s been done.
