Shrimp trucks galore on Oahu’s North Shore

There are loads of new shrimp stops and trucks popping up along Kamehameha Highway that it’s hard to tell the real thing from the fakers. Kahuku’s shrimp are a tasty mid-day treat if you’re spending a day up on the North Shore, but here’s a breakdown of the best shrimp trucks of the bunch:

  • Giovanni’s Shrimp Truck is located on Burroughs Rd & Kamehameha Hwy.  It’s the oldest and most famous shrimp truck in Kahuku, with the garlic scampi plate being the most popular selection for $11.  There are large crowds during peak hours as well as on the weekends — but worth it!
  • Macky’s Kahuku Sweet Shrimp is another popular lunch stop. Its shrimp plates come with two scoops of rice, a pineapple slice, a piece of sweet potato, and a green salad. Macky’s was the winner of the 2005 Battle of the Northshore Shrimp Trucks contest that was part of the Turtle Bay Resort’s first annual Seafood Festival.
  • Romy’s Kahuku Prawns and Shrimp Hut serves fresh harvested shrimp directly from their ponds.  They offer the standard garlic and spicy sauces, and also a special asian-style house sauce that includes soy sauce and chile sauce. If you’re not in the mood for prawns, there are several non-shrimp items on the menu.
  • Fumi’s is located in front of the shrimp ponds near Romy’s. Its colorful “Hawaiian sunset” truck is impossible to miss, and their shrimp plates are simple but delicious. They offer garlic sauce, lemon butter sauce, and a spicy sauce.  Plates are served with two scoops of rice, fresh pineapple slices, and a green salad.
