Experience Colonial Times in Auckland, New Zealand.

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to live in Colonial times?

I know I have. I’d love to try on those big fancy dresses and bonnets, ride in a wagon, enjoy tea parties, and watch cannon firing and military activity. Well now you can step back in time and experience the past at the Howick Historical Village in Auckland New Zealand.

General store

There are over thirty original colonial buildings on the seven acre site, including schools, a church, forge and general store. You can explore gardens and buildings in the Fencible settlement during the 1840 to 1880 period (Fencibles were army regiments raised in the colonies for defence against the threat of invasion during the American War of Independence and French Revolutionary Wars in the late 18th century.)

On the third Sunday of every month (except December) a ‘Live Day’ is held. On a Live Day the entire village is filled with activity, as up to 30 costumed villagers go about their daily tasks.

Chat to the costumed staff in this living museum, or take a break to savour the home-style food and real coffee in the cafe. Enjoy a peaceful day in beautiful surroundings, coming face to face with the past.

The visiting 65th Regiment has an encampment and performs military duties including cannon firing (on occasions) and musket drill. A blacksmith’s forge is in operation, and a bodger works on his pole lathe, turning wood.

Call into the general store or visit cottages where you can sample food cooked over the fires, or learn about everyday crafts and activities. You can experience a Victorian school lesson, take part in a church service, and enjoy various forms of entertainment.

The next live day will be the Victorian Picnic Day on Sunday 16th January 2011. Visitors can pack a picnic and head along to enjoy music and entertainment.  White Doves will be released to celebrate the New Year and there will be a Victorian Sweet Shop set up.

Entrance fees: $14 per adult, $7 per child.

Location: The corner of Lady Marie Drive & Bells Road, Lloyd Elsmore Park, Pakuranga, Auckland, New Zealand.

Opening hours: The museum, cafe and shop are open 7 days a week from 10am to 4pm, all year round except Christmas Day, New Year’s Day, Good Friday and Anzac Day.
