A Doo-Wop New Year’s Eve at DC’s Carlyle Club
It’s already time to start thinking about dancing the night away on New Year’s Eve. And here’s a fun way — with the singing of Joe Coleman, a former lead vocalist with The Platters (“Only You” , “My Prayer”, “The Great Pretender”) at the enjoyable retro-jazz club, The Carlyle Club in Alexandria, Virginia.
This New Year’s Eve party come complete with live music, dancing, party favors, and the classic midnight champagne toast and optional dinner.
DC area native Joe Coleman joined the classic doo-wop group in 1992, to fill a spot in one of the group’s several incarnations. The Platters were first formed in 1953, and of the original line up of 5 singers, only one is still alive. Since the early years, the original Platters have long since devolved into one of the over 20 Platters spin-off groups, each started as a result of ongoing member infighting and virtually non-stop legal battles. Yet despite the battles, Coleman delighted audiences as lead singer, performing around the globe, including regular shows at the famous Las Vegas’ Sahara Hotel and Casino.
Over the years, Coleman has also performed with Barbra Streisand, The Temptations, Smokey Robinson, Natalie Cole, B.B. King, and Lou Rawls.
Expect him to sing several of The Platters’ classic tunes, as well as a few standards as well as a few tunes from his personal catalogue that include R&B, Pop, Jazz, Blues and of course, doo-wop oldies.
Also performing will be Ms. Teri S and The LCB Band, as well as a surprise guest artist or two.
The evening offers a Prix-Fixe dinner ($90 per person + $63 cover charge,) which frankly, based on a past dining experience, I would pass on. Instead, go for the bar-only package at $63 per person, plus drinks. However, if you decide to spend the evening at the bar, plan on arriving early to get a seat, otherwise, you may be not just dancing but also standing the night away.
