A guide to central and west Oahu
With nearly 600 surf spots, over 50 miles of sandy beaches, over 35 golf course, 88% sunshine and an average temperature of 77 degrees, it’s really no wonder Oahu is the main hub for travelers to the 50th state. There’s so much to do within this island’s 600 square miles that could take up a whole lifetime and then some. Oahu’s timeless natural beauty and its modern urban luxuries make it one of the world’s top travel destinations.
Despite being less trodden, the central and western parts of Oahu also have the most visited sight in all the islands: Pearl Harbor. A must-see while here, the Arizona Memorial, Battelship Missouri, submarine Bowfin, and Pacific Aviation Museum have enough for tourists to take in for a few days. This was the crucial site where Japan struck Pearl Harbor, marking the United States’s entry into World War II.
Hawaii’s only premium outlet stores are located at Waikele Shopping Center, where visitors can make impressive brand name purchases from over 50 outlet stores at low prices. Many of these shoppers stay at the Ko’olina Resort, where 4 man-made lagoons surround luxury accommodations for over 2,000 hotel guests. Also closeby is Hawaii’s only water adventure theme park in Kapolei.
Finally, the day cannot be complete without a visit to the beach. Makaha Beach Park, close to the end of the road in the “Wild West” of Oahu, offers good swimming, body boarding and surfing. Be aware that there is a more local vibe out west from Nanakuli to Yokohama Bay. Tourists are not advised to leave valuables in their cars, and should respect the locals, as always.
