Thailand & Malaysia For Families

Here on the Eastern Seaboard, when we want a little sunshine and culture, we head South to the Caribbean. For those on the West Coast, usually Hawaii and the South Pacific feature prominently on itineraries. But for those on the other side of the world, and a remarkable number from the UK, Asia holidays are where it’s at: specifically Thailand and Malaysia.

One of the nice things about Thailand’s tourism infrastructure, is that families have choices. For those with an independent streak, holidays to Thailand can be self-serve and self-catering, or you can do the fully-inclusive resort route. Whichever way is your way, there are several don’t-miss outings and attractions that are sure to create life-long memories for you and your children.

Tops on my family’s list, in addition to the glorious beaches of Phuket and Hua Hin, is Chiang Mai — and a visit to the Elephant Nature Park. This sanctuary for rescued elephants is currently home to 34 gentle giants, and offers many ways for you and your children to interact with these magnificent beasts. From learning how to care and clean the elephants, to swimming with them and staying overnight in the park, your future zoologists can get up close and personal with these beautiful elephants who have been rescued from overwork and abusive environments.

Once you’ve eaten your fill of Pad Thai, and since you’re in that part of the world anyway, why not pop down the Malay Peninsula and check out Malaysia for a bit?

Malaysia is a study in contrasts. Due to its ethnic diversity, excellent Indian and Chinese cuisine can be enjoyed, as well as a variety of experiences.  If sun, sand, and the Andaman Sea appeals, don’t miss the spectacular beaches on the Island of Langkawi. Noted as a World Geopark by UNESCO, you can laze about on beautiful Pantai Cenang beach, explore Kilim Karst Geoforest Park, then do a bit of damage to your credit card in Kuah while enjoying Langkawi’s duty-free status.

Most Malaysia holiday packages offer several destinations, so why not contrast your lazy beach days with some serious excitement in Kuala Lumpur? Malaysia’s largest city, Kuala Lumpur (or just KL as it’s commonly referred to) is as big and exciting as Langkawi is beautiful and subdued. It’s the 5th most visited city in the world, with almost 9 million visitors last year. Many come for the shopping, as KL is renowned for offering high-end brands at discount prices, but don’t forget to explore the bustling Chinatown, and the famous Petronas Twin Towers are a don’t-miss. Modeled after symbols found in Islamic art, the towers are the tallest twin buildings in the world, and the centerpiece of Kuala Lumpur’s impressive skyline.

With so much to do and see in South East Asia, it’s well worth it to book ahead and highlight your must-dos. As amazing as the beaches in that part of the world are, Thailand’s and Malaysia’s fascinating history and beautiful cultures means your kids might actually learn something too!
