La Guadalupana Bakery and Cafe

tex mex, mexican food, dinerYou might drive by La Guadalupana a dozen times or more before you decide to stop in, or even notice it at all.  That’s how it went for me, anyway; until a few weeks ago I had only cruised by La Guadalupana on my way to or from somewhere else.  I recently got back in touch with an old high school friend, one who has been living in Houston for the last year, and he emailed me to meet for breakfast, suggesting La Guadalupana.  His recommendation included the sentence: “I’d live there if I could.”

So over a long breakfast with an old friend I tried the migas - spicy eggs scrambled with pieces of tortilla, served with rice and refried beans, with warm, soft tortillas on the side (choice of flour or corn).  My friend got the huevos rancheros - fried eggs atop fried tortillas, served with rice and refried beans with soft tortillas on the side (again, choice of flour or corn).  Combined with the homemade salsas served along side, the food tasted authentic and delicious.  Not only was our meal outstanding in every way, it was extremely affordable; most dishes on the menu fell between $4 and $12.  I would be remiss if I didn’t also mention the house coffee, flavored with cinnamon and served steaming hot, with bottomless refills.

In an effort to be calorically responsible I skipped out on the delicious-looking pastries and cakes available for take-home. Luckily the more figure-friendly house coffee is available for purchase, and it is much easier on the waistline.

La Guadalupana is located at 2109 Dunleavy St. (map).  Tucked onto a corner lot with an adjacent convenience store, the diner shares its parking lot with the store.  On-street parking is available on side streets if the parking lot is full.
