Summer Beers Made in NYC
Even if you’re not a self proclaimed beer connoisseur but simply prefer great tasting craft brews over the heavily commercial watered-down rivals, you have plenty to choose from in NYC. Here are some unique seasonal favorites currently on tap at the following breweries:
Chelsea Brewing Company Checker Cab Blonde Ale
Located on Pier 59, The Chelsea Brewing Company’s huge copper-clad tanks loom large behind the polished mahogany bar overlooking the white tablecloth dining area and spectacular sunset views of the Hudson River. Sit out on their deck and ask for the
Checker Cab Blond Ale, a clean and snappy thirst quencher made with the finest imported Noble Hops and 10% wheat malt. The finish is dry yet complex with a delicate hop flavor and aroma.
Open daily noon – 2 a.m. Free tours from 2 to 6pm on Saturdays. By subway: After taking the A or E train to the 8th Ave. – 14th Street station, hail a cab to Pier 59
Heartland Brewery Indian River and Summertime Apricot Ales
Attesting to its popularity, Heartland Brewery has expanded to 7 Manhattan locations since opening in 1995. Two beers here perfectly pair with summer. The Indian River Light Ale, named after the river that flows through Florida’s orange groves, this light pale citrus ale has subtle refreshing coriander and orange undertones. Building on the fruit motif, their Summertime Apricot Ale is a tasty wheat ale that’s faintly spicy on the tongue with a bouquet hinting at sun-ripened apricots. Refreshing but not overpowering!
Their two level establishment at the base of the Empire State Building is located at 350 5th Ave. at 34th Street. By subway: Take the N or R train to the 34th Street – Herald Square Station. Walk 1 block down to 5th Avenue. Hours: Sun-Tue: 11am-11:30pm Wed-Sat: 11am-12am
Sixpoint Eight Days o’ Wheat
My favorite, Sixpoint Craft Ales has partnered with Whole Foods Market to create Eight Days o’ Wheat which is only served on tap at
the Bowery Beer Room in Whole Foods on East Houston Street. Another unconventional wheat beer, it’s hearty, hoppy and cut with tart lemon. Just a reminder: the Beer Room isn’t a bar so fill up a growler and take it to-go.
Open 7 days 8 a.m. – 11 p.m. By subway: Take the F or V Train to 2nd Ave – Lower East Side Station. and walk 1 block up to The Bowery.
