3 Places to Cycle in Delhi
Since Indian roads are not pedestrian friendly, you must be wondering why on earth I’m daring you to cycle in the Indian capital. Well, the fact is that not all places in Delhi are violent towards pedestrians or cyclists. There are some rather scenic routes worth the exploration on foot or on a cycle. In this post, I’ll introduce you to three safe, scenic places to cycle while you are in the capital.
Dwarka
Dwarka is said to be Asia’s largest residential colony with a capacity to house over a million people. It is located in south west Delhi, very close to the international airport. The colony boasts of excellent town planning, wonderful roads, and is cleaner than most parts of Delhi. Dwarka is about 40% occupied, hence the roads are underutilized and generally in spic ‘n span condition. You can even get some very cheap accommodation rentals in this part of the capital.
For a longer ride, head towards Gurgaon. The ride is pleasant, even during peak hours.
NDMC Area
Sansar Marg is in South/Central Delhi. This area is maintained by the New Delhi Municipality Corporation (NDMC). Take a ride from the Sansar Marg to Connaught Place to India Gate. The route will have you going through some historic sites, such as the Old Fort, and tourist locations, like the National Museum and Rajghat. For a longer ride, head towards the Ridge or the Lodhi Gardens.
Caution: In this recent past, the Ridge has seen quite an increase in traffic volumes. It is best you cycle in this area during non-peak hours, preferably early morning.
Delhi University
There are very few places in Delhi that are green as the Delhi University (DU) premises. With a cloud of knowledge over your head, you can hire a cycle from the Delhi Metro station for Rs. 30 ($1) and enjoy the day exploring India’s finest academic institutions. For some dirt road riding, you can head towards the DU Ridge. Cars are not allowed in this area and you can safely surround yourself with trees and historically significant monuments. When you get tired, head for Kamla Nagar and enjoy the omelets.
