100th Anniversary of the PNE

There’s a big celebration this August as the Pacific National Exhibition celebrates it’s 100th Anniversary.  This popular fair, known as the PNE, takes place from Saturday, August 21 to Monday September 6, 2010 and kicks off the a revival of the PNE Parade on Friday, August 20 at 7 pm.

The parade route has been changed from past times, and will proceed along picturesque Beach Avenue in English Bay from Stanley Park to Sunset Beach.  The organizers say this will be the biggest and best parade paying tribute to all the special memories and highlights of the Fair’s 10 decades of history.  All of us who live in Vancouver can remember the fun we had attending this gala parade and celebration, and this year it’s guaranteed to be extra special!

The PNE has announced an impressive entertainment lineup for this year’s fair which huge acts to celebrate this special milestone.  Local musician, Bryan Adams, performs at the newly refurbish Empire Field on Saturday, August 21The Beach Boys will be the opening act. Tickets for this show are $40. The show starts at 1 pm. Other entertainment is free with admission to the fair, at 7 pm each night on the concert stage between the Agrodome and PNE Gardens.  Movie star Kevin Costner will kick off the free concerts with his band Modern West, on August 21.

Other stars appearing during the fair are country star Terri Clark, August 22, Michael Bolton, August 23 and Loverboy, August 24.  Huey Lewis and the News, August 25, followed by Wayne Newton, August 26 and Joan Jett, August 27, Mariana’s Trench, August 28, Spirit of the West, August 19 and a Los Lobos/John Hiatt double bill, August 20

And that’s not all!  Popular former DJ, Red Robinson, will MC an Elvis night on august 31, Jesse Cook plays September 1, the Little River Band plays September 2 and Cyndi Lauper, September 3.  Former Barenaked Ladies singer Stephen Page, September 4, the The Road Hammers, September 5 and Trooper winds up the evening concerts on September 6.

During the afternoon Vancouver’s well-known musician Dal Richards will be back playing the afternoon shows throughout the fair. This will be his 71st consecutive year at the PNE.  And another old favorite, Rolf Harris, does a special show at 1 pm, August 26.

Besides all this great entertainment, be sure and take in the exhibits, the animal shows, and other entertainment going on around the fair grounds.  This includes the exciting midway rides.  It’s great fun for the whole family!  So come on down and spend the day celebrating the PNE’s fabulous 100th anniversary party!

Tickets: Obtain tickets and passes at the gates or online (here).  Ages 6-64 $20 (on line $16.80).  Seniors $8 (on line $7).  Children under 5 free.   Fair Rides passes are $42 (on line $39.75) .  Riders must be over 48″ tall. FREE Admission Sunday August 22, 9 am to noon.
