Edinburgh Photo Friday: Firth of Forth

Today’s Photo Friday tip is one of the most fabulous things you can do during an Edinburgh summer:  go boating out on the Firth of Forth!  The firth of forth is the sea estuary that wraps around Edinburgh from the north sea and heads inland.  The major provider of boat tours is Forth Tours, and with views like this, what’s not to like?

The firth is actually a fjord, formed by glaciers in the ice age.  The forth is narrower that it used to be, in places, due to land reclamation by farmers and industrial estates.  It extends all the way back to just near Stirling, and the only road crossing is the Forth Road Bridge.

Oddly enough, boat tours don’t leave from Leith or Newhaven or any other city habours (not even Cramond Beach). That would be nice, but until then  you have to head out to South Queensferry, where you’ll find departures.  Forth runs a bus service from the city centre out to South Queensferry, and while you’re there you can check out some of the quaint shops and of course the iconic Forth Rail Bridge.
