Mexico City International Marathon
The 28th annual Mexico City International Marathon (Maratón Internacional de la Ciudad de Mexico) is just over a month away. This year’s marathon event is scheduled to take place on Sunday September 12, 2010. The race is scheduled to begin at 7am. In previous years the event has taken place in late August or late September. The date of the 2010 Mexico City International Marathon has been pushed forward to coincide with the country’s Independence Day bicentennial celebrations.
There are actually two races taking place, the full marathon (42km/ 26.2 miles) and a half-marathon race (21km/ 13.1 miles). The Mexico City International Marathon and half-marathon routes begin at Avenida 20 de Novembre and the Plaza de la Constitución, or zocalo (map) and continue through the historic center of Mexico City before ending up back at the Mexico City zocalo.
The marathon course is relatively flat and scenic. It passes many of the city’s important monuments and attractions including Chapultepec Park, Avenida Reforma, the Angel de la Independencia and the Palace of Fine Arts. I’ve yet to run the course myself, but it gets good reviews from past year’s participants on the Marathon Guide website.
The cost to register for the Mexico City International Marathon is MX$250 ($20) for Mexican citizens and MX$750 ($60) for foreign citizens. Registration stays open until noon on September 11, 2010 and participants can register online or in any of the Martí or Sport City stores located throughout Mexico City. To register online simply visit the Mexico City International Marathon website at www.maraton.df.gob.mx.
