Viking History in Dublin

Many visitors to Dublin take the opportunity to enjoy historical attractions during their trip. From the fantastic tour of Kilmainham Jail to the history of Ireland’s most famous brew, Guinness, there is history throughout the city. However, many visitors don’t know that the history of this city actually goes much further back. If you’re interested in Viking and Medieval History, there is one place in Dublin you shouldn’t miss, a museum called Dublinia.

Dublinia is located right in the heart of central Dublin, and yet many people don’t know about it. My hypothesis is because it doesn’t have much to do with what visitors traditionally think of as Irish history. In other words, people don’t come to Dublin to learn about the Vikings. And yet, right in the center of the city, there is an incredible resource full of exhibitions that will show you just how important the Vikings were to Dublin and the settlement of Ireland. In fact, this museum will show you that the history of Dublin stretches back over 1,000 years.

Dublinia is a great choice for families because it is an interactive experience. To learn about Vikings kids will be have the chance to try on Viking clothes and hear their music, along with learning what life was like on a Viking ship and what Medieval Dublin would have looked like. This attraction is open daily from 10am – 5pm and tickets are very affordable. Adults pay €6.95 and kids pay €4.95 for access to Dublinia. Tickets can also be booked in advance online.

To learn about a different kind of history and heritage in Dublin, check out this museum. It’s a great place to spend a rainy day!
