Street Food Tours with Eat Mexico
If you’ve been following my monthly Mexico City Eats segment here on PlanetEye Traveler you’re probably aware that I love sampling the street food in Mexico City. Street food stalls can be found on nearly every corner and while it’s great fun exploring the city’s street food scene, determining where to stop or what to order can often present a bit of a challenge, especially for newcomers and visitors to Mexico City. Fortunately, – a new culinary tourism business focusing on Mexican food – is helping to eliminate some of the uncertainty by offering guided street food tours in the capital.

Eat Mexico was founded as recently as June of this year by , an American expat living in Mexico City, and , a chilanga who’s lived in Mexico City since she was nine years old. According to the Eat Mexico website, Lesley and Jesica created Eat Mexico,
“as a way to share real, authentic Mexican food with the rest of the world — its flavors, its vibrancy, its history, its culture.”
I recently had the opportunity to find out more about Eat Mexico culinary tours during a co-founder Lesley Téllez. She spoke to me about the company’s three signature tours, Street Food, Tacos and Mexican Markets, all of which showcase some of the best street food to be found in the capital. Lesley explained that Eat Mexico culinary tours involve more than simply sampling the city’s street food,
“The history and culture perspective is an important part of our tours. We’re not just eating, but we’re learning about where the food comes from, how it’s prepared, and who is preparing it.”

In addition to the three signature tours the company is currently exploring the idea of introducing a pulque/ mescal/ tequila/ wine tour, and a chiles en nogada tour, both of which sound well-worth checking out.
All of the tours offered by Eat Mexico are completely customizable and can be modified to accommodate special dietary needs or preferences. As Lesley noted,
“If you’re interested in exploring the best sweets of Mexico City (concha rolls, churros, Mexican candy, etc.), we can organize a tour for you. Likewise if you’re interested in pre-Columbian insects — grasshoppers, worms and the like — we can set up an itinerary that meets your needs.”
If a street food tour with Eat Mexico sounds like something you might be interested in you can read more about the experience on the Edible Geography website which recently published – an excellent review of Eat Mexico culinary tours along with some interesting insight into the history and culture of street food in Mexico City. I would like to congratulate Eat Mexico on their venture. Culianry Tourism should be at the heart of any destinations marketing and sadly the DMOs do not seem to recognise this.
So it is left to people like Eat Mexico to show the unique culinary fare that is on offer.
I have only been to Mexico once and at the time there were no such companies in excistance. For my it is all about the Fresh Local Organic Seasonal and Sustainable [of FLOSS a acronym I borrowed from the International Culinary Tourism Association while if completed my CCTP certification]
I am now looking for an opportunity to re-visit mexico!
