Spiral – an Audience Participation Arts Festival
This month sees Camden Arts Centre holding a festival with a difference – it’s an arts festival where the audience is asked to join in, and with a particular focus on kids getting involved. The next four weeks will see a series of activities leading up to the free Spiral festival on 28-29 August.
For instance, visitors will be asked to participate in building a monumental sculpture. And the sculpture isn’t the only result – the artist, Serena Korda, will also be using that input to create a ritualised dance to be performed at the festival weekend.
There are free drop-in workshops in drawing, print-making, and clay work, there are dance workshops (I must go – I’ve always wanted to be a rock star!), and there’s a chance to help shoot a viral music video.
One of the most rewarding ways of approaching this festival would be to drop into the ‘Open Studio’ sections each week – you can then see the pieces you’ve been involved with actually performed or screened. Anyone who’s wondering how to get their kids involved with art or help them discover their creativity, this is a marvellous event to try out.
Better still it’s free!
