Dublin Daytrip: Exploring the Powerscourt Estate

Many times on this blog I have said that a trip to Dublin isn’t complete without leaving the center of the city for a glimpse of the countryside. While there are many historical attractions, quaint villages, and fantastic coastline views to take in, one of my favorite daytrips from Dublin is the Powerscourt Estate in County Wicklow. Not only is this estate home to the outrageously good Ritz Carlton Powerscourt and a famous golf course, but it also has a few things to offer those who are traveling on a budget.

First stop should be the Powerscourt Waterfall. Pack a picnic from one of the many gourmet shops in Dublin and hop in the rental car heading south into County Wicklow, also called the Garden of Ireland. (Alternatively, there are bus tours of County Wicklow that definitely include the highlights of the Powerscourt Estate). However, with the independence of a rental car you will be free to explore things at your own pace. At the almost 400-foot waterfall there are picnic tables and the thundering water makes a great backdrop to enjoy artisanal Irish cheeses, smoked salmon, and traditional brown soda bread.

After a picnic, the Powerscourt Gardens are the ideal place to go for an afternoon stroll. With a backdrop of the Sugar Loaf Mountain and surrounding mountains, the gardens are truly spectacular. Visiting this popular attraction will be like taking a step back in time, as the gardens first began to be planned and crafted centuries ago. Today, visitors can tour the walled garden, the striking terraces, and the famous Japanese garden.

If this walk works up an appetite, stop into the Powerscourt House and grab a scone and a coffee at the Avoca Cafe. And the best part about this daytrip from Dublin? Both of these incredible sites are located less than 30 minutes from Dublin city center.
