Museum Night in Mexico City
The (Museum Night) event in Mexico City gives residents and visitors an opportunity to spend an evening visiting some of Mexico City’s finest museums and enjoying the city’s nightlife. Mexico City has been designated the 2010 Latin American Capital of Culture and the city is home to over a hundred museums, more than twenty of which are participating in the Museum Night program of events.
Museum Night in Mexico City
The Museum Night program began last November as part of Cultural Heritage Month and received such a favorable response that the city decided to extend it through the end of the year. The program aims to attract new audiences to the exhibitions, with a special focus on attracting visitors who are unable to visit the museums during normal opening hours due to work or school commitments.
In addition to opening the museums outside of normal operating hours, the Museum Night events feature a special program of cultural activities including concerts, plays, book presentations, lectures and dramatized tours.
Some of the participating museums include the (Museo de la Ciudad de Mexico) (), the (Museo Archivo de la Fotografía) (), the (Museo Nacional de Arte) (), the (Museo Mural Diego Rivera) () and the National Palace (Palacio Nacional) ().
Mexico City’s cultural tranvía (trolley) tour company is supporting the Museum Night program by providing public transportation for event participants. Trolley tickets cost M$35 ($3) and permit riders to hop-on and hop-off at participating museums throughout the entire evening. In addition, several of the restaurants and shops in the surrounding area will offer special promotions to customers on the night of the event.
The next Museum Night event in Mexico City is scheduled to take place on Wednesday August 25th, 2010.
