Edinburgh Photo Friday: City of the Dead
It’s another photo Friday here at Planeteye, and let’s celebrate this TGIF with some dead people!
Edinburgh is well known for its many haunted spaces and places, so during your tour I highly recommend you check one of them out. You don’t have to look hard – these guys are along the royal mile every day ready ready to take your coin. Here are four spooky options for your scares and delight.
The Witchery Tours
This is a more light-hearted tour I’d say, which explains about the gore and ghoul of the cities more ‘medieval’ cultural practices. They are also a great source for DVDs, books and other ghostly information.

Auld Reekie Tours
Auld Reekie is for the seriously scared tourist – I think on these tours, fright is guaranteed. One great option with these guys is the underground tour, which takes you through some of the old vaults (underground chambers that connect the old streets of the city, now underground).

City of the Dead
City of the Dead tours take you into Greyfriars Kirkyard, one of the most haunted places in the city. On top of that, they also have some of the most informed guides in town – I’ve learned so much history from those guys. Fantastic.

Mary King’s Close
Last but not least is Mary King’s Close, where you can visit an underground street. You see, Edinburgh was built up in layovers over layers, and this is an excellent glimpse into how it all hangs together.
