Summer Swimming in Dublin

Yes, you read that title correctly, swimming in Dublin. I don’t promise that the water will be warm (in fact, odds are that it will be freezing cold) but once you get over the initial shock of the cold temperatures, you will become part of what has become a year-round tradition in Ireland. That’s right, all year long. Brave men (and some women) will take to the following coves along the Dublin coast for either a brief dunk or good 10 – 15 minute swim. And as a bonus, this activity is rumored to improve your immune system and keep away the cold and flu.

The first December I spent in Dublin I was shocked to learn that it was a Christmas tradition to go down to the sea and go for a quick dunk. This annual activity was more than just a swim however, it became part of the community celebration of the holiday. Entire families went for a stroll down to the water to visit with neighbors and a festive atmosphere brought families back year after year. No matter the weather, the brave (and perhaps those who have had a drink or two) either inch their way in to the water, or choose the run and jump option.

December is now many months behind us, and for those of us who would rather not include swimming in the ocean in the middle of winter on our vacation itineraries, there is an alternative option. Dublin doesn’t have incredibly warm summers, but every once in a while, a bright sunny day makes going for a swim an actual option. The only thing left to decide is where to go. Both of the following swimming holes can be reached via the DART train – no rental car needed.

1. The 40 Foot: Located south of Dublin city center in Sandycove, the 40 foot is a famous swimming hole where many locals face the temperatures of the Irish Sea every day. Don’t expect to see only the young – you might be surprised just how many men of senior citizen age take a swim each day! (Bring your own towel, there are areas to get changed after your swim). 2. Vico Road: Located south of Dublin city center in Dalkey, Vico Road is a swimming hole that has remained a pretty well-kept secret. You have to hike down through rock and wildflower to reach the swimming hole, and be prepared for a tradition of nude bathing – no modesty here! The experience here can differ depending on the tides, so be careful at all times when climbing in and out of the water. (map)

Happy Swimming!
