Edinburgh Photo Friday: The Queen’s Hall
This gorgeous photo Friday shot – an interior, different than our usual – comes from the Queen’s Hall (map), a lovely music venue on the south side of Edinburgh’s old town.
The venue opened in 1823 as Hope Park Chapel, and stayed that until 1979 when it was converted into a music hall. It was opened Queen Elizabeth. The steeple has a beautiful clock, a refurbished feature (though the interior furnishings were stolen in the 70s).
It now is open year-round as a multi-purpose venue; some of the accolades that it can count to its name include:
- year-round home of the Scottish Chamber Orchestra
- a major Edinburgh International Festival venue
- an Edinburgh Fringe venue
- a host for the Edinburgh Jazz and Blues Festival
- host to one of the best Hogmanay ceilidhs
Amongst all of those events, the Queen’s Hall also finds time to host several live music events, ceilidhs, and special events – just look at their calendar, there are well over 200 events a year here.
The interior of the building is quite interesting, with a quirky-yet-cozy bar area and a main floor seating area that is covered with an upper mezzanine. The upper floor was added just in 1991, which gives the space a very unique style (excellent acoustics) and distinct horseshoe shape.
