Escape to the Irish Countryside: Sheen Falls Lodge

While there is always more to see and do in Dublin, a trip to the countryside will really complete a true Irish experience. There are many directions to head from the Irish capital, but one of my favorites is west to County Kerry, where stunning landscapes and cozy lodges will make you want to stay an extra few days. Outdoor enthusiasts will love the hiking and golf or if you want, just sit back and enjoy the views along a scenic drive.

One of the gems of County Kerry is Killarney and its famous lake. This is simply one of the most spectacular sites in the Emerald Isle – and while there are many lovely hotels in this village, there’s one hotel just a little farther on that I love even more. Sheen Falls Lodge is a 5-star resort and member of Relais & Chateaux. It is hidden outside of the village of Kenmare, a foodie haven, in County Kerry. If you really want to get away from it all, book a room along the River Sheen and get ready to unwind.

The first thing I noticed walking into Sheen Falls was the aroma of a wood-burning fireplace. There are several in fact, and they are so cozy that you will want to curl up on the couch each morning with the newspaper and a pot of tea. And go ahead! Sheen Falls Lodge is all about relaxing. This hotel has a library if you want to borrow a book, and one of the best breakfast spreads I’ve ever seen. I love special touches like homemade breads, local Irish cheeses, and plenty of fresh fruit.

Wine lovers will definitely want to visit Sheen Falls on their tour of the West of Ireland. Sheen Falls has one of the biggest and most impressive wine cellars in the entire country, and each day, the sommelier gives a tour of the cellar to interested guests. This is a great way to begin your evening, and even before dining in the hotel’s award-winning restaurant, you can discuss wine options with the sommelier! Don’t miss dinner in the elegant dining room overlooking the River Sheen, or the heated indoor pool, or the opportunity to go cycling on the grounds. There is so much to do beyond relaxing at Sheen Falls, so plan on spending a few days to get the real experience.
