Visions of Martha’s Vineyard

Martha’s Vineyard (map)  is one of those places that has always been on my list to visit. The Vineyard, as it is often referred to, is the largest true island of the east coast as it is not connected to the mainland by bridge or tunnel.  Once considered primarily a summer colony, iconic images of Massachusetts island often bring these pictures to mind. The lighthouse at Gay Head, Martha’s Vineyard (map).

The harbor at Menemsha (map)

It is the images of the darling gingerbread homes, part of Wesleyan Grove (map), a 34-acre National Historic Landmark District, that has made me want to visit Martha’s Vineyard even more.  The cottages are part of Martha’s Vineyard Campmeeting Association and was developed as a large Methodist summer campground, shortly after the civil war, as a site for open air revivals. The cottages were built in the oak grove around the Tabernacle at the camp.
